Sony\'s been so quiet for so long, have they been sitting on a few huge press releases to drop on the hopefull gaming comunity at the last minute?

Today\'s news

The basic system would be dropped to 49 800 Y (about 425 USD) in Japan, and this may carry over to the US.  Also, there will be an HDMI output on both versions as HD has become more important...

They didn\'t mention price changes for the upper one, although I imagine they\'re coming (btw, he specifically clarified that the new pricing was Japan only NA has to wait for news).  Same other differences though, baring further news releases.  No mem-card reader, no wi-fi support (still has lan port though), and smaller HDD in the lower package.

Who didn\'t see this coming? I wonder if its easier to just put the HDMI ports in during the manufacturing process or cheaper. There probably is some reason. I don\'t see them doing it to be nice. Somewhere costs got cut.

costs certainly didn\'t go down per unit to add HDMI, however, I\'m sure the cost was negligible versus the positive PR spin they would get out of it.

i think its a good thing for consumers that sony cut the cost and added an HDMI port the cheaper version too.  Making it more competitive for XBOX360 that are planning to sell their external hd-dvd drive....whereas the cheaper ps3 version will be cheaper than 360 with hd-dvd combo.

^No price cuts in the US, but the 20G version WILL get HDMI out, though.

I think I still may have to go with the more expensive version. An extra hundred bucks. Who cares. Besides, we have no more extra ports in our router in my apartment. There were only 4 ports and 4 drunk retards so wireless would be awesome. The cost of an addon probably is a good 70 bucks itself and if I run out of space on the hard drive, I\'m screwed. Nah, just best to shell out the extra hundred bucks :)

WiFi makes the premium one worthwhile in my opinion. If you\'re into spending that much on a system, anyway.

Is Sony FINALLY starting to hit back? Price reduction and HDMI in both versions.

There goes the retard argument. :)

All of a sudden the 20GB-model looks fantastic. 100USD cheaper, of course 40GB less but that can be fixed. It\'s looking mighty fine.
But I already have my 60GB preordered so I\'ll stick with that. Also I\'ll be using WiFi for my PSP.

So the $499 version will take advantage of an HDTV?

It always did. HDMI is not needed for HD. It\'s a digital cable, that\'s the difference.
