Anyone take any martial arts / boxing?
« Reply #30 on: October 18, 2006, 07:30:21 PM »
just had the first lesson.  The Muay-Thai gym is actually mixed martial arts and they offer Boxing separately.  Only $90/mo so I went for it.

I thought I was in shape but the trainer kicked my ass.  I hung in well during the warm ups & calisthenics but the boxing drills made me feel like a 12 yr old girl compared to the others.

Anyway, it feels good to have that "Sh!t I\'m gonna die" feeling again ;)

one of my menz back in new jerz took up something called silat...i think it\'s some kind of korean martial arts,...but it\'s very deadly,..it relies on alot of counters,...and with each counter, you can literally kill or cripple somebody, i mean every counter that i\'ve seen from that style will either break a bone or cut off you air supply, and the killer is that anybody can do it...

long story short, the trainer stated that you only need a certain amount of pressure to break any bone, and the tehnique that was displayed was techniques imo that would work out in the streets,...i know some martial arts work only if the perp is attacking you a certain way, from what i\'ve seen in silat, it seems no-matter how the perp attacks you, you will have a dominant counter..
knowledge, wisdom & understanding..these are the basic fundamentals of life

if you can\'t amaze them with brilliance, baffle them with bullsh*t....

Friend of mine who\'s been boxing for 5 years has always told me that martial arts is more show then go. He tells me in most street fights the pro karate, jee kuan do etc.. people tend to lose to the experienced boxer/street fighter.

The problem with martial arts is they\'re a complex way to \'solve\' a problem (fight).  Until you master them and spend years in training, you aren\'t ready for every way someone can attack you.

Boxing is the opposite, a very simple way to win a fight.  Protect yourself, and punch - so at much less training a boxer will win.  I would imagine that with 20 years of training under both belts, however, a master martialartist would win.  (Also one of the reasons I recommended Judo... a simpler martial art based on holding/throwing in \'general cases\').

Thats one of the things that annoyied Bruce Lee about the way martial arts were being taught and went to create Jeet Kune Do which is supposed to be a style with no particular style. He tought that you should do whatever it takes and be able to adjust yourself to anything like a flow, instead of thinking "if he does this I ll do this and that". Thats why he studied Mohamet Ali\'s style among other styles and added it in his own martial art.
Unfortunately even Jeet Kune Do is being studied today just like other martial arts

Jeet Kun Do is more of an idea than a specific martial art. It can be applied to any fighting style. Bruce Lee called it the "artless art". He talked about street fights a lot and Bruce Lee himself got into street fights. He kept perfecting his form until nobody on the streets could kick his ass. Kind of violent life he grew up in. But his ideas are very deep and if you\'re into martial arts, you should pick up his Tao of Jeet Kun Do book. Interesting stuff.
