Anyone take any martial arts / boxing?
« on: October 13, 2006, 09:46:54 PM »
Been thinking about taking boxing or muay-thai kickboxing lessons.  Don\'t wanna get serious into it, just looking for something that\'s challenging.  Going to the gym alone can get a tad boring. :fighting:

I\'ve always wanted to try out Wing Chun, because it looks cool as hell, but I dunno.. boxing seems more like an athlete\'s sport.

Kick Boxing. They work quite well in the real world should you need to apply your fist on someone\'s face.

Why not? Great for physical excercise and defense. I do TaeKwonDo but its the World TaeKwonDo Federation style not the International which means its more like a sport than a martial art.

Muay-thai is very effective. Boxing as well which I think is easier to apply too. It looks like an athlete sport but if you take its excercises seriously and get used to punches you will gain great power and speed. Go for it. Wing Chung is a brilliant martial art. 3 years will make you very effective. 6 years will make you unstoppable. I d prefer the last though since it takes deeper physical excercises and techngiques than boxing

thanks for the input.  Not worried about defending myself, never been in a fight.  I\'m doing this purely for sport and physical challenge.

Take a look at a boxer vs. wing chun practitioner.  The wing chun guys are fast but the average boxer looks much more toned and formidable, like they are true athletes.

I think you will be satisfied with either choice. Dont underestimate Wing Chun though. Their bodies are very trained as well. Depends highly from the teacher though.

And also a lot of boxers train in various different ways. One is weight training. You can take your martial arts training and add in your own forms of training. You don\'t want to be hulkish because speed is important, but you should never underestimate someone because of their size.

Boxing gym will give you the stamina and the real world skills. I think a lot of the forms training of Karate (or Wu Shu) doesn\'t translate well into the real world. Boxing is aerobics training to the max. Karate (and many of the other types) basically require more money as you ascend to the next belt.

The problem with boxing is, you may be bullied by the gym rats if they think you\'re too soft.

I\'m a short filipino, i\'m used to being bullied. :op:

I\'ll check out the local boxing gym first and see if I like it.  Then switch over to Muay-Thai if not

Muay-Thai is another excellent choice too! but I think it\'s more expensive than boxing.
