Gears of War living up to the hype?
« on: November 07, 2006, 12:05:38 PM »
This is probably the most hyped game..ever,lol. Iv heard this game more than halo 2.

  IGN- 9.4
  GameSpot- 9.6
  Game Informer- 9.5
  GamePro- 4.75/5
Yahoo! Games- 4.5 out of 5
  TeamXBOX- 9.6 out of 10
  1UP- 10 out of 10
Computer & Video Games UK- 9 out of 10
Eurogamer- 8 out of 10  (only rated single player)
Games Radar- 10 out of 10

http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/928234.asp

pretty damn good ratings. The Eurogamer review only reviews single player..not even sure why they even bothered reviewing the game without putting everything into consideration. Online deathmatch and coop is a big part of the game.

Im getting it tomorrow so i cant give any personal thoughts about the game.

I wonder if the reviewers just bought into the hype.

But it does look like a pretty solid game from what I\'ve seen. It\'s a straight up shooter so I don\'t know if I would like it, but it looks solid for what it is.

You\'d think one or two of them would give them 8\'s if it werent as good as the hype..since 8\'s a good score so they dont get flamed, but not a 9.4, 9.6...gamespot, from what iv seen, gives most games 8\'s.

But im honestly more excited about R6: Vegas. Same idea of using cover with a more realistic game. R6 has a perfect balance of strategy/planning and action. Not insanely slow like ghost recon.

Here one interesting mini user-review I read:

Quote

Waiting to see if anyone gives the game a "true" review and actually get past the graphics. I admit the graphics are the best I have ever seen but the gameplay is awkward at times (especially with the melee attack chainsaw) the game is extremely repetitious as the stages seem to similar and the camera angles get annoying at times.

It is a shame because this game looks so beautiful but when you start to play it you just get the feeling after a while that "it has to get better" but it never really does. For being a CLiff B. game I was suprised because usually his games are so tight and have some of the best gameplay aspects. Maybe the third person perspective makes it awkward but the game definately lacks the phenomenal gameplay to go with its superior graphics.

Either way I\'m glad the 360 finally has a killer app.  I think it\'s safe to say the next-gen bar has been set.

Just picked up my copied today at EB, this game is beautiful.
I am about to go online and do some multi-player

Live Gametag "UBBER1337"

Something else I noticed about GOW, that I was hoping would be incorporated into the game, which isn\'t. Real time physics for objects etc..
Like when I fire bullets at concrete, i was hoping we would see the objects react with one another, instead of the concrete pulverising it just sparks.

that actually really surprises me since real time physics has been the latest big thing incorporated into games.

Seems so chaotic though i dont think ill notice.

Man this game sure is pretty the more I play it. I can\'t help but feel that it\'s still a pale in comparison to what the PC offers for FPS. having to use a controller to aim/view is a real drag, total handicap, I was getting slaughtered in Multiplayer. My fingers are so accustomed to having a keyboard for instant access to weapons/moves. Also I dislike the major delay when to view your surroundings, I guess this is the quark of all console fps. It just seems to be pretty clear that fast action fps have no business on a console.

Will the 360 ever get a mouse for it\'s fps? (99% sure it will never happen)

Aside from my negative comments for a console FPS this game is Top NOTCH!
I love the animation/movements of the characters, the lighting is awesome and if you have a 5.2 surround system you are in for a treat.

this was one game that i\'ve always thought would be stellar,...if i were to get a 360, it would seriously be only for this game, but since i only buy one system per gen, i\'m gonna hold out for ps3, but gears of war really has me wanting to cop a 360...

^^^^meh, not really, it\'s just that i can\'t see buying more than one system per gen, i like games, but not to the point where i need all three, i always just pick one system and roll with it, as good as gears of war is, one game doesn\'t warrant a purchase. I\'ve been with sony since psx, and they have satisfied my gaming needs, even tho this time around i think ms and sony will really be on equal ground....lastly i didn\'t like the xbox controllers and i\'m assuming the 360m controllers are probably a variation of the xbox controllers, so i guess i wouldn\'t like them as well,...the ps controllers have the perfect fit...imo.

It is pretty much the same shape as the first xbox\'s controller but without the stupid buttons like the back/foreward and the white and black ones one the bottom right.

My issue at first was that it was really easy to accidently press the start button. Maybe it was just fight night since i dont play it anymore, but id always hit that damn thing. But i dont have a problem with it anymore.

And they added a second R and L buttons like the Ps2 controller.

I dont really like one over the other, but iv definitly gotten used to the 360 controller

The 360 is 10 times better than the shitty xbox1 controller which I hated. M$ got it right.

SONY has yet to clue in that the Left analog stick should be moved further up. Other than that PSX controller has a nice fit, considering I have between small to medium hands. Rumble is usless

i totally forgot about the left analog stick. On the ps2 controller i ALWAYS used the d-pad. It just feels right, while holding the left stick just felt awkward. In madden id always use the d-pad, mainly because i felt out of control with the stick. But on 360 i never even hesitated to use the stick.

I honestly never touch the d-pad, but i think it\'s because of its placement. If they switched the d-pad and the stick, id be using the d-pad.

My gamertag thing is ViperFujax..ill have gears of war tomorrow..hopefully circuit city will have it in. I tried to call them but theyre f-in retards. He was like "um..you can call back friday to see if we have it in"...i was like..FRIDAY? its f-in tuesday..but i just said thanks and hung up since i knew i wouldnt get anywhere. The guy even asked his manager before he came up with his "call friday" answer. have 15% off there..which is why im going through the trouble.

anyone know if gamestop price matches? i have a fry\'s by me and theyre selling it for 50 bucks..but the drive there is hectic as fauk so i dont really want to drive down there.
