WTF Do You Tell Someone Who\'s About To Kill Themselves?

This guy I know from another message board is about to kill himself in less than an hour. Like 15 different people on the site including myself were in a group chat last night trying to convince him otherwise. We eventually thought that he was better because he was acting as such. Now, here I am talking to him online and I\'m the only one that knows he\'s going to go through with it. I talk to this guy quite often so I know it\'s in his personality to do such a thing. He\'s led a horrible life and has been abused and such (in many ways) by his brother and his father cheats on his mom and she forgives him. But obviously none of this justifies taking one\'s own life. And there are many people out there who have it way worse than he does and are still staying strong.

I\'ve talked my friend out of suicide before, but I don\'t know what to say in this situation. I don\'t know him personally.

I just don\'t know what to do or say, guys. My heart hurts. I feel sick to my stomach knowing that someone I talk to every other day is about to end his life. One of the other guys had called 4 different police stations, but since we all thought he was better, he called them again and cancelled the report. I wish he had not done that. I don\'t know.

Great, he said he\'s about to leave to take a shower. He said he wants to be "clean" before he does this.

I would have told him to be a man. Have a spine. Show some responsibility and not take the cowardly way out. If everything sucks, why not either help make it better, or find a way to get away from it and make your situation better. Killing yourself is just a cheap way of giving up and it\'s kind of pathetic. Turn your life around, make it into a positive and you could not only be happy with yourself but become a role model for others.
 
I\'d try to piss him off. You get suicidal out of depression but if you can get someone pissed, then they want to channel their energy differently.
 
But if he does decide to off himself, f him. You went above and beyond the call of duty for dealing with a moron like that. And I know calling him a moron is harsh, but if he can\'t commit to something more productive or positive, then I see no reason to take back the insult - regardless of his apparent intelligence.
 
You have nothing to regret no matter what the outcome. You did the right thing, but if he wants to do the right thing, he\'ll have to snap out of his stupid little funk and take some control of his own life. He\'s being soft and letting others control him.

Good work, you\'ve gone above and beyond.  I think you should try and contact the police in his area again.  In person they can contact him or friends/family and make sure he gets the help he needs, ensuring he doesn\'t do anything spur of the moment in the near future.

Yeah, the police never responded from his area. Freaking idiots. I guess they thought it was a prank call, but I\'ll talk to the guy that has the police contact info again so he can get it through their heads this time.

I did everything I could to help him and I think it helped. But yeah, he is pretty messed up in the head and has some severe mental problems.

Thanks for responding guys, I\'ll take some of your advice. It\'s just so hard to deal with things like this and even if you don\'t know someone personally, it\'s still a human being taking their own life. If he ultimately decides to take his life, there\'s nothing I can do. Ya know? =\\

I dont buy the whole internet suicide thing..and even still, the world is better off without some loser that wants to sadden friends and family b/c he is a mental midget.

I was thinking this as a possibilty as well. Either that or he WANTS someone to help him. If he wanted to die, he would\'ve done it already. But ya never know with these kind of things. I\'ve dealt with someone I actually knew with this situation, and it was quite disheartening, but I\'m glad I talked her out of it, though it drained me emotionally to do so. I\'m thankful that nobody I know has actually gone through with the entire life ending decision.

I don\'t buy into that "the world is better off" thing, however.

the only time i buy it is when i see someone taking pills or cutting themselves, perhaps a loaded gun in mouth.

Otherwise its just just a cry for attention.

You should buy the whole weak thing....imagine if your life was in danger and this mental midget is the only one that could save you. Would he be able to pull it off, or be too damn weak and scared?

My life has sucked HARD at some points, more so than alot of others id bet, but i did what other normal peo[ple do..pull up on the boot straps and survive.

Whether an attention whore or the much less likely real thing, you get some contact info and inform the proper authorities.  At the least they\'ll get a visit (and attention whores won\'t do it again), and if it\'s real you could very well be responsible for saving someone\'s life.  There are difficulties with the net, of course, if you don\'t have contact info then there are limits (remember Ripper) to what you can do.  Just do the best you can and you will sleep soundly (good advice for most of your life).

Ditto on that. This past year sucked so majorly for me (and I don\'t want to get into it. Too long of a story) but I kept positive and worked my way through it. I was really depressed and contemplated it a few times but never followed through because I knew I would get over it and be stronger for it. I mean, I still feel like affected by the breakup and can\'t feel like I can trust a relationship again but that\'s something I need to work on. I\'m really hoping your friend can get the help he needs. I know he can work through his problems if he saw the proper people and he needs a friend like you to walk him through it.

Damn I just hope he is the type that remains in words than action to get some affection and understanding. But in all honesty I dont know what I would have done if I were in your shoes.
But I know that if I were in HIS shoes I would have made suicidal thoughts many times. Its very unfortunate that so many unfortunate events exist.
