Hey Chizz... (and anyone else who plays guitar)
« on: November 22, 2006, 07:40:01 PM »
I hate my Stratocaster.

I\'m thinking of getting some new pickups for it to maybe make me actually wanna play it.

This is what I have....

What kinda pickups should I get, if any?

I think I just need a new guitar.

It that a genunie Fender?  What do you dislike about it?  I see one major thing wrong with it... a humbucker in a Stratocaster????  :hissyfit:That is heresy, but I know many people just don\'t understand why.

If you describe what you dislike about it, I could make a suggestion.

Yeah its a genuine and I hear you about the Humbucker thing. I got this guitar when I really knew nothng about them. It\'s called a "fat strat" because of the humbucker.

I just hate the tone. I play metal or hard rock, and it always ends up sounding "twangy" and light no matter what I try.

Have you played that Gibson? It\'s got those humbuckers like you want, but I\'d look at a Jackson or Ibanez before I bought a Gibson. My dad always told me Gibson\'s are overpriced because of their name.

yeah, les paul is the way to go....if you have the loot. And Vivi, your dad is wrong. They\'re expensive because they\'re handmade in the USA. They will last a lifetime. Fenders became popular cos they were cheaper (bolt-on neck)

SG\'s are pretty cool, but be sure to spend some time with one strapped on (heh)..they\'re neck-heavy, and that can be weird for some people (myself included)...if you let go of the neck, it will tilt down. I sort of felt like I was fighting those things. Les pauls are balls-ass heavy, but they sit so well when you put the strap at its longest. On the SG, the tone you want is there, and the neck-thru design make for long sustain. If you want heavy, throw a set of 11\'s on that beast, and play the neck pickup. (less twang) You could also have a humbucker put in your strat in the neck position, but that could cost you almost as much as an sg standard. My advice to everybody has always been: Jimi Hendrix that strat, son....

Agreed 100% on the Les Paul. They are amazing guitars. I love the looks and feel of it. I\'d like to get an Epiphone Les Paul used within the next year or so if I can find a good deal. But, I know its cheaper compared to the real Les Paul and would still one day, when I get that high paying job, get an actual Les Paul. I\'d get the Epiphone more for the looks :) I\'m very happy with my Schecter at the moment. When I get more serious in my playing, I probably will replace the pickups but that\'s it.

Okay, so I\'m going back and forth between an SG and a Les Paul.

I will take some time and do my research.

I\'ve always wanted an SG, but the neck heavy thing could bother me.

I was never a big fan of the SG. Good guitar yes but I never was big into the look. I liked the Les Paul a lot better.

les pauls are massive, dense hunks of wood, they are heavy. your shoulder gets sore after a while...back in the day we would have 8 hour practices in july and I\'d be shirtless after 2 hours. I\'d come home with my left shoulder rubbed raw from the leather strap. But that density creates a playing experience like no other.

Luke check out ESP\'s options in the Les Paul/SG area great guitars for less then Gibby\'s price.... unless of course you can afford Gibby\'s, thinner faster necks on ESP\'s also. Just make sure you get Duncan pickups to stay close to the tone you\'re looking for, EMG\'s don\'t have quite the warmth of Duncans.

Money is a factor. I\'ll go play some ESP\'s at guitar center.

I\'ve always wanted a Gibson though.. I\'m a fuckin\' adult with a job dammit!
