Video Card Recommendations
« on: January 06, 2007, 07:27:25 PM »
Ok, So i have a geforce 6600GT 128MB and the 128 is what\'s killing me. I really only play raven shield, battlefield 2, call of duty 2, and GRAW; all of which are on most medium with some high settings (i try to get the important ones like terrain on high) but im still having some stuttering problems. So i did the test to see how BF2 would run on my computer (even though i know how it runs) and pretty much laid out everything i have in my computer..i put it as an attachment so you guys could see everything.

I only want a relatively short term card, for max around $230 because i plan on doing a overhaul when direct x 10 and crysis is out. Id just like to run those 4 games i play with no problems.

For those with BF2, i have everything on medium except texture, effects and terrain (which are on high) and i have studdering problems.

One weird/trivial thing: i had problems with 1 gig, so i got a second gig and it worked perfectly on the same settings. Then i formatted and the only thing that switched was i got a new windows xp home edition and now im having a problem that almost looks like i have 1 gig, but it does read that i have 2..soo..might just be my video card for whatever reason acting up.

NOTE: Sorry the picture is so small..had a hard time getting it to 1 MB

Stupid question: Can you swap out a video card in a laptop?

It would have to be around the same size and supported by your laptop hardware. Laptops are a pain in the arse to upgrade, though.

it\'s PCI-e..i was actually really thinking of getting that exact card.

Do you think the jump from 7800 to 7900 is worth 70 bucks?

nvm..i narrowed it down to http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130049 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150216 .

Probably the same but im just gunna do some more reading up before deciding. Leaning towards eVGA because i like/know the company

edit: random question- I was looking through my box of computer crap and came across an nvidia nforce4 series chipset support cd and an evga display driver installtion CD. Iv updated my drivers through nvidia.com, but i didnt run those cd\'s after formatting/reinstalling everything. Would that affect my games?

no, you always want to get the latest version off the nvidia.com site.  The drivers on the cd are just the latest version available when your hardware was originally shipped (and are usually a bit outdated).

oh btw... did compusa pricematch for you?

they didnt have anything. The best they had was a pny 7900 GS.

I bought http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150216 and decided to wait for the shipping

Being that the main newegg warehouse is in cali you shouldn\'t have to wait long for shipping.  Every time I\'ve ordered a video card they allways seem to come from City of Industry... but when I order memory or a new HD they always come out of New Jersey.

yea, its way better. Got rvs on all high on 1280x1024, bf2 on all high but on 1024.768 (little choppy for some reason on 1280) and graw runs on all high with 1280.

Wish r6:vegas would release a demo to see how my computer runs current games..not that id buy it since i have it for 360.
