need to buy a mac
« on: January 19, 2007, 07:47:02 AM »
welp I have to buy a mac to use Final Cut Pro.  It\'s the easiest way for me to edit this show I am doing.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  I see the Mac Pro starts at 2500 bucks.

Do I need to buy memory from Apple or can I do it myself?

Do I need to buy the computer from Apple or can I just go to CompUSA?

If you\'re going to buy memory, buy it elsewhere...otherwise Apple will charge you up the arse. I suggest getting your memory from this site ~> http://www.kahlon.com

If CompUSA carries Apple computers, then I see no problem with that. But if you\'re going to pay that much, you might as well get an Apple Care Plan from Apple. They\'ll fix your computer for free for 3 years, I believe.

Isn\'t the Mac Pro a Quad Xeon? I hate you. ;)

I hope that helps.

mac pro is dual Woodcrest chips, meaning 4 cores total.  http://www.crucial.com is also good for mac memory (which uses the same as PC).

We need new macs at work but they are too freaking much.  It would be nice to drop 10g\'s just like that and get 4 Mac Pros.  I\'m pretty sure no one goes with the base $2500 model in the professional field.  My co-worker mentioned the Mac Pro he priced out was near $13k!?

Too bad you can\'t upgrade a G4 to make it faster... or can you?

I am figuring about 3500 plus 1500 for software.  I don\'t really need adobe suite for the mac since I have it on the PC so I really only need Final Cut.

I\'m going to check out the refurbs on the site too to see what\'s up.  Yuck.  A Mac in the vid household.  Curses.

why do you have to use final cut pro?  No doubt it\'s a nice program, but it seems the purchase is against your will

Not sure how you could price out a mac pro to 13k but I do agree they are expensive as all hell.  Its why despite the fact my school requires a mac, I\'m sitting here typing on my windows machine.

I\'ve heard numerous people around my school recommend crucial for memory so I think that would be a good bet to at least check out and evi is right about buying directly from Apple.  The apple care is really nice to have especially since about 50% of the people I know have had their macbooks/powerbooks crash at some point in the first two years of ownership.  For some reason or another, apple products seem to like to die after a year or two of use.
Wrong. There are two other people who can.

Yeah.  I think I am going to go with base memory and go to crucial for the rest.

Final cut pro works natively with IMX and MXF files.  That\'s why I want to get FCP.

If you buy THIS, you can run the Windows XP Creative Suite natively on your Mac inside OS X. Makes things a lot easier.

Actually, with that program, you can run just about ANY Operating System natively inside OS X (yes...natively, not emulated - it\'s called "virtualization"). Very convenient if you don\'t feel like booting into Windows on the Mac if that thought should even bounce around in your skull. Or you can just stick with using Windows apps on your Windows PC. But the option to run both natively at the same time is there since you\'re going with an Intel Mac.

Vid, I think you\'ll come to like a Mac. I\'ve been using my new MacBook for about a week now and I absolutely love it. It\'s fast, slim and gorgeous, and Mac OS X is everything XP should have been (and Vista for that sake). You don\'t have to worry about spyware and that crap, or XP suddenly dropping your Internet connection for no damn reason at all.

Embrace it and you\'ll soon come to like it. :)

Don\'t go to Crucial. They\'re price is equal to the Mac store. Forget about it. Go to http://www.newegg.com as you can get 2gigs for $308 for Crucial\'s 1gig for the same price.

Which Pro are you getting? 2.66 or 3 gHz? 10% extra power does not justify the 30% price mark up. Save the money on RAM.

And if you can get a student discount, do it. It\'ll knock off about $400 or more from the total price. My wife is going back to school so we went with that route. Discount applies also to (up to 3, I think) software.

I have a Mac Pro at home. It\'s heavy. It\'s ugly. It\'s powerful.

Man....I hope you got the ATI video card so you can do dual monitors. Also it has excellent graphics.

I just have the stock video card.  I only use one monitor.  24" is big enough for now.
