Codemasters Developing In-House \'Neon Engine\'

Representatives from British publisher and developer Codemasters have revealed that the company is creating its own Neon engine for the PlayStation 3, in conjunction with Sony Computer Entertainment.

Speaking to UK trade magazine Develop, as reprinted by consumer website PSINext, Codemasters producer Gavin Cheshire indicated that, “We looked at the middleware solutions we could use - we had no axe to grind, frankly, and just wanted to find the technology we could have ready for the next-gen so we weren’t left catching up in ten years’ time. We looked around at the Renderwares and the Unreals, but nothing really fulfilled our requirements – specifically for the PS3, anyway.”

As a result of this research, Codemasters contacted Sony and have begun the construction of a new next generation engine, built from scratch over the last eighteen months.

“Sony knew early on that it was going to be hard to get the very best out of the PS3 early on, so the Japan office commissioned a team in Europe to start devising new technology and tools,” said Cheshire. “What we were able to do is exploit something that Sony was developing internally, which we were the first to see – and since then we’ve worked very closely with Sony. It’s a two-way street.”

Unusually though, the Neon engine is intended to be cross platform, with Cheshire indicating that, “Sony said that was fine. Sony realises that the only way to make next-gen viable for everyone was to allow everyone to exploit technology”. The first game to use the engine will be rally game Colin McRae DIRT, expected on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

The detail Neon provides enables the team to model locations and environments as accurately as possible, providing each with a unique look and feel, right down to the effects of the wind. Using real-time physics to model air movements, everything will be affected by the wind: exhaust smoke, trees, foliage, trackside flags, rainfall and the vehicles themselves. A car will create an air rush wake that will have an effect on everything it passes and also generate a real-time slipstream.

Impact from damage will see metal crumple, glass smash and everything that you collide with in the environment will be destroyed in a realistic way. Small trees snap and bend, grass can be flattened, wood will splinter and stone will be smashed, it’ll even wrap a car around a tree if the crash is serious enough.

That cant be a real game. I dont believe it. This looks as good as the motorstorm target render. No way this is in game. Thats TOO good to be real!

that very last pic bizioee posted is more believable....granted i think those other pics are shots in replay angles, which in general are touched up a bit more than when you are actually playin the game....that\'s my take on it.....still looks good tho...

PS3 is region-free ;)

I\'ve seen rally games here for sale in the states so I hope they will release it here. BTW, Speed Channel canceling rally coverage was so stupid. They are so far up NASCAR\'s ass its not even funny. I liked watching real races and not that NASCAR shit.

I\'m only impressed with the picture with the splashing water.  In the rest of the pictures everything outside of the cars is blurred beyond belief.  The draw distance in this game will probably be terrible or distant objects will be blurred crazy

I dont think this ranks in the my top 5 or even 10 best looking PS3 games.
