HD-DVD player vs Ps3
« on: April 20, 2007, 10:42:02 PM »
Okay. I\'ve been dieing for HD movies ever since i got my HDTV, and I\'d like to use the tv for all its worth instead of waiting around. Mixed with working my ass off, and not paying serious bills yet (just my credit card, gas, and helping pay for school), Im in the mood for buying something.

Option 1) 360 HD-DVD addon: I\'ve heard it has bad DVD playback and some bugs (my friend said his clerks 2 and batman freeze every now and then). But i also heard that it does upconvert DVD\'s if you have VGA. Anyone know how good the upconversion is? I\'m also skeptical because i tried VGA\'ing my 360 and my tv kept saying something like "PC mode not found" so im not even sure it will work. benefit is that its only 200 bucks and at least HD-DVD\'s look great.

Option 2) HD-DVD standalone player: I wont buy a blu-ray standalone. Too much money. But this one looks really good, and a reasonable price. My tv is only 1080i, so getting the one higher up from this doesnt work for me. http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-HD-A2-HD-DVD-Player/dp/B000IJV4BC/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-4575366-1872910?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1177137290&sr=8-1 . Supposedly the upconversion is awesome, and looks HD-esque. So even if HD-DVD loses, i have a player that makes DVD\'s look great. The draw-back is that it\'s a lot of money for something that only plays movies. But i do get 5 free hd-dvd\'s out of a manufacturers deal.

Option 3) Ps3. I\'d probably wait a little longer for some games to come out, since 200 bucks more than the standalone hd-dvd player is a good amount. I\'ve also heard that the upconversion of DVD\'s suck on it. The plus-side is i get a gaming system out of it, but since i have the 360, it wouldnt really be the main point of getting it, which kind of seems like a waste to me. But it wouldnt be once god of war 3, shadow of the collosus 2, and metal gear come out...which wont be for a longgggggggg time

I have a feeling everyones going to say option 3, but im really leaning towards option 2. Was about to buy it last night, but couldnt go through with it.

PS: Dont say "WRONG FORUM!" I didnt feel like debating between off topic, main forum, and the console forum

I just want to say that I own a good upconverting DVD player (Oppo) and you\'re not going to mistake it for real HD any time soon.

I also want HD, but I\'m going to wait for prices to go down (and a clear cut winner, although my money\'s on Blu-Ray atm). Until then HD movies from Xbox marketplace will satisfy my HD needs without shelling out big money on a possibly soon dead format.

But if you want HD-DVD I heard Toshiba\'s gonna let some Chinese folks manufacture some players, which I guess will be quite cheap. And also Blu-Ray players are supposed to get cheaper later in the year... Just food for thought.

yeah. Best thing to do atm if you are unsure is spend your money on something else or find some way to cool off your HD needs.

My bet is on BR to and  I\'d go with option 3... but my opinion might be a i little biased :) I plan to own the 3 console within the 3 next year but haven\'t decided the order to buy them.. I\'ll need to replace my PS2 soon.. Since PS3 is compatible with all my current games, I\'ll favor the PS3 over the x360. I\'ll then buy Wii and x360 last.

Blu-Ray has a bigger catalog, wider studio support, and better market penetration because of the PS3.  Many signs point to BR winning the format war.  If you go with the PS3 you get a kickass gaming system with it.

See the catalogs of each before you make your decision.  I like Sammy\'s idea of going with the infamous Oppo upconverting player.  You will LOVE the quality.  The Panasonic S77/S97 is alternative that sports most of the same innards (Faraoudja DCDi vid proc).

you know you need my love handles evi...bitch

Still leaning towards hd-dvd player. Add everything with a ps3 in and its really 700 bucks (a game or two, controller charger, etc). But the upconverters are something ill think about.

For some reason, i like the hd-dvd movie selection a lot more than the blu ray, even though blu ray has more studios supporting it. I really dont think anythings going to be decided for a long time. Like 25% of people own a hdtv, let alone the smaller portion that owns the players.

Its pretty much how much of an impact the cheaper hd-dvd has with the consumers vs. what seems to be the stores/studios support of blu-ray. Probably the release of pixar films (i think on blu ray only)  could be a deciding factor..but hd-dvd\'s do have some nice releases coming later this year.

BR Burners are also available in many store, even for portable. HD-DVD burner is almost impossible to find.. This give another edge to BR imo.

I decided against hd-dvd. Luckily got out of the mood of buying something.

anyway, i got children of men on dvd, put it in my 360 and realized it looked really grainy, and kind of bad. Is that the upconverter you guys were talking about? There\'s one that does 1080p, but i just got my tv and its 1080i, and i dont plan on upgrading any time soon. Next time i get a tv, itll be for whatevers above 1080p.
