so i deleted my virus program.....
« on: August 22, 2007, 10:31:42 AM »
and need another one. I somehow switched it off when doing my computer maintenance. Instead of messing around to get it reactivated, I just want a new virus program (btw, I already deleted it :) ). I hated this one anyway. It was a pain to update (so I never did), it scanned constantly (which I hated because it hogged system resources) and I just want a new one. Things I kinda want. I want it to upgrade every now and then and I don\'t want it to constantly scan; it bugs me. Any recommendations of some good free programs?

If free: AVAST and AVG.

If you want the best: NOD32 and Kaspersky.

But any of them should work. I personally use AVG on my PC (mainly because I don\'t care about it anymore and frequently reinstall Windows). If I was serious about it, I would buy and use NOD32.

TrendMicro is ass. And AVG is even worse than TrendMicro. Horrible detection and very lame-ass "shields". If you use AVG, it\'s like using a broken condom. Horrible protection. Please do not ever use AVG. It is horribly overrated garbage. The testing of that program has determined it blows monkey balls.

Download this if you\'re looking for something good and free ~> http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/

When you install it and then restart the computer, right-click on the sphere icon with the "a" on it and click "Start avast! Antivirus" and it will bring up a window that asks you to register. Click register and it will send you a free registration serial. The program is 100% free, but they just want to know that you\'re using their stuff because it makes them feel warm and fuzzy or something.

If you don\'t like the idea of having a company send you e-mail due to spam, use an e-mail like TITanhatesspam@mailinator.com

Then go to www.mailinator.com and type in TITanhatesspam to check your fake e-mail and the avast! registration serial will be sent to you that way. So you won\'t get spam. ;)

Also, avast! has a scheduled boot-time scan option that scans even before SAFE mode, so it scans extremely fast.

So there you go.

It\'s been a while since I used AVAST. But at that time it was horribly slow and had a shitty interface. I guess that\'s changed now.

AVG runs pretty well on my PC. But then again, the Windows install is pretty new so it\'s not filled with crap.

AVG uses low resources and that\'s about the only thing it does. That\'s how they get people to think it\'s a good program, but it sucks. I have an old ass laptop and avast! runs perfectly fine. I\'m using NOD32 right now, though.

I saw a test between AVG and NOD32. This folder was scanned that had thousands of viruses. AVG took 20 minutes to scan. NOD32 took 30 seconds to scan and found thousands more viruses than AVG did.

AVG sucks.

And I can\'t wait to get my new MacBook Pro because I don\'t want to bother with this crap anymore.

The 3 best, IMO:

Kaspersky
NOD32
avast!

I would also say BitDefender, but BitDefender is horribly slow.

It\'s quite scary how sucky most antivirus programs are actually. :)

Most are slow, use quite a bit of resources and can\'t even find all the nasty stuff. To be honest I think most people just get the most flashy program (or buy from whatever company that has the biggest marketing department).

Kaspersky rapes everything else time and time again. And think about this...Kaspersky is the only program that can\'t be hacked/patched/etc...

Kaspersky also won the "100% Detection Award". It also uses fairly low system resources and scans quite fast. The program is a bit anal though, so you need to have at least some knowledge of the computer because it will tell you literally everything that\'s happening with your computer and it takes time for it to "learn" about your computing behavior.

If you get a new virus that isn\'t in the database yet, the virus will be sent to their lab and they will send you a definition update within a half hour or so to eradicate that new virus. They are on the ball.

Kaspersky > Everything else

But it\'s more expensive than other anti-virus/security suite programs. It\'s awesome though.

Haha. That\'s the one I used. It was one that my school had. I think it was a McAffee scanner but wasn\'t their release. It was terribly slow, couldn\'t detect an unwanted program if its life depended on it and it scanned at a rate of like 1 file every 30 seconds. And, it robbed system resources like it was its job.

BTW, how much is Kaspersky? I\'m starting to get interested in it. I really just wanted the best free scanner to kind of appease my computer and my school.

TITan, you lazy SOB. ;)

http://usa.kaspersky.com/store/   <-- says it\'s $60 for a year.

NOD32 is $39 for one year, $58.50 for two. Renewal is $27 per year or something.

You\'re welcome. :thumb:

I\'m just waiting for freaking OS X Leopard to come out so I can get my MacBook Pro. Don\'t want to fork out another 160 smackers for a new OS. Would rather just have it included with the system. But that doesn\'t come out until October. =[
