Well Cyprus has lots of history. It is in the middle of three continents and close to some of the biggest ancient civilizations. In the ancient times it was a gateway to their trade.

There is also a researcher that claims Cyprus is a part of the lost Atlantis.

It may not be the birthplace of civilization but it sure had more civilization than you think. More than the US (if we exclude all the native Americans that were torn apart by European colonists)
