a PS3 question
« on: January 01, 2008, 04:38:36 PM »
is it possible to download videos off youtube style sites and put them onto a PS3?

there are a few cool videos I have found that I would like to put on mine, but they are .flv format and I\'m not sure if they would work.

you could always just convert them from flv to mp4 using any of the psp video conversion programs. Hanve\'t tried it myself but can\'t see why it wouldnt work.

I use this one and it works really well

You just go to here to download any videos off of youtube.  Then use the Riva FLV Encoder, pick the flv file you downloaded as the input, then in the output box change the .flv on the end to .mpeg and hit encode at the bottom and there you go.  FLV to MPEG

Works like a charm

I tried that, but it just keeps returning an error message about encoding failed.

Copy them to your PS3 and see if they will work as an .flv file. I think the PS3 can still play them as they are.

If not why dont you try TVersity and stream them from there with transcoding? .flv files can be played from TVersity to your PS3.

If I am not mistaken you dont need to connect it to the net. If both your PS3 and your computer are connected to the modem/router whether your PS3 can get to the internet or not it doesnt matter. It will communicate directly with your computer through DLNA

ok, another PS3 question.

I\'ve been reading some reviews on google, and have been considering thrying to connect by ethernet cable instead of wireless.

seeing as my pc is in one room, and my PS3 is in another, it would mean me having to buy another longer ethernet cable.

I\'ve been looking around, and I\'ve found this:

http://svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=455&prepg=1

I\'m not sure about what category I should use, I\'ve heard a lot avout different categories and speeds.

would that be what I should be considering?

how far away it\'s from your pc to your ps3 in two different rooms?

I think Cat5 should works since most internet connection only use about a small fraction of 100 mbps.  I think 20 meters ethernet cable should be enough between the two room...

well the thing is this, I would really like some spare, in case I ever decide to take my PS3 downstairs to play it, if I go for 20, I\'m not sure it would be enough when I\'ve trailed it all around the corners and everything..

are there any disadvantages to getting a longer cable? I read somewhere that longer ones can tend to lag out and shit like that, don\'t know if it\'s true or not, I don\'t mind paying the bit more for the long 30m one if I know it\'s not going to deteriorate perfomance..

oh, and another thing, I did actually manage to get online with my PS3 this time by the ethernet cable, which leads me to another question.

does the PS3 have in-built security software like a firewall/antivirus etc?

in your case, it seems like it\'s a lot more convenience to use wireless ethernet connection.

AFAIK I think not. Perhaps you needed some kind of security key for your modem/router? I dont remember well what you tried the other time but if you were trying wireless perhaps you needed to add your WEP key
