Only the sheetmetal used in body panels, hood, and front fascia is designed to crumple in a collision. The firewall is actually supposed to be as strong as possible to prevent intrusions from the engine bay into the passenger compartment. The only thing I can figure is that the tree came in under the edge of the firewall. Otherwise it makes no sense.
Unless Chrysler recently decided to move Jeep production to China.
