Need internal harddrive recommendations
« on: May 16, 2008, 08:36:16 PM »
I was leaning towards http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16822152100&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&Pagesize=10&SelectedRating=-1&PurchaseMark=&VideoOnlyMark=False&Page=5 but some of the reviews said that nvidia chipset motherboards weren\'t compatible with them.

Im pretty retarded with computer specs, my motherboard is http://www.strangebrewpc.com/moreinfo.cfm/634 , is that an nvidia one?

it\'s a cheap mobo since my sli one screwed up, and ill only get a top mobo if i decide to do a huge overhaul.

that being said, my price range is ~90-120. I guess i could go more expensive since i\'d be able to use this HDD whenever i do the overhaul, but id still like to keep it in that price range

I\'ll always recommend Samsung, especially over WD. I got a WD 500 gb disk because it was available locally and I needed a disk fast, but I\'m a bit disappointed with it. It\'s not nearly as quiet as my old 200 gb Samsung... When I get another disk, it\'ll be a Samsung for sure. Fast, quiet and reliable.

It\'s been a while since I had Seagate, so I don\'t know how they fare nowadays. I\'m sure they\'re ok (didn\'t they buy WD though?).

i got 2 seagate 320gig sata 2 drives and haven\'t had a problem with them. They work great and make hardly any noise. well none really.

cool. so do you guys think i\'d be safe getting the $89 500 gig ones? everyone seems to think samsung, seagate, and WD are alright. was just hesitent since all of the $89 ones had a handful of DOA\'s..but i guess thats normal with computer stuff.

My HDD that crapped was WD but it was pretty damn old.

buying a new hard drive didn\'t fix my problem.

After i format and it goes to install windows 98 (we\'re cheap and only bought an upgrade version of xp, so we have to first install 98), it gets stuck at the blue windows loading screen, where the blue bar that goes across the bottom of the screen goes super slowly and never gets to the next screen.

the oldest piece of equipment is the power supply. Has anyone heard of that being a symptom of a bad power supply? if the power supply was the problem would it even get past the formatting and to the windows loading screen?

there\'s obviously nothing on the harddrive so it cant be that..and the hdd was my only guess

for a start, get a proper version of XP.  If the way you\'re installing it isn\'t the problem, it could be a memory issue. Use a program called Memtest 86 http://www.memtest86.com/  This program will test your mem and make sure its not screwed.

As for is your mobo a nforce mobo, yea it is. Uses nForce 410 chipset

yup, i borrowed my brother\'s full version of windows xp and it worked. for now at least..iv lost all confidence in computers working

After the new HDD didnt work i had a feeling it was that system of using windows 98 and upgrading to xp.

computers are so f-in random. It worked perfectly fine for months, than all of a sudden it doesnt work. usually when that happens its hardware
