its getting about time for me to buy a PS3
« on: June 14, 2008, 12:42:18 PM »
Ok, so I got a really good paying job now and making well over 300 dollars a week. So I can afford a PS3 within a week or two and I plan on buying one very soon. Now, I\'m having trouble deciding between the 40, 60 and 80 GB models. I bought a PS2 last year so I don\'t think the backwards compatibility will be an issue. I can just keep my PS2 hooked up. However, when I travel back and forth to school, carrying a PS2 can be a hassle (even though its just a slim one). That\'s why I would buy the 60 or 80 GB models. I heard the 60 has the chips of the PS2 but the 80 is just emulation which has issues (and I know they don\'t mkae the 60 anymore). Also, buying the adapters for the memory cards and Guitar Hero controllers is just a pain to me.

Are there any disadvantages of getting the 40 over the 80? Is the backwards compatibility the only thing the 80 lacks? Are all the connectors the same on both? If you were in my situation, what would you get?

The cheaper PS3 has less USB jacks, a smaller hard drive, and no backwards compatibility.

If you can live with that, then by all means get the 40. I did, and I don\'t regret it at all.

you\'re already spending 400 bucks. when you get that high, whats the extra 100 for 40 more gigs of harddrive. The 40 gig isnt even 40 gigs. my 80 gig was like 74 out of the box, then minus another handful of gigs for the stuff thats already on there (menu system and what-not)

im clostrophobic with hard drives, so id recommend 80 since you have to install all your games on the hard drive. why it\'s even labeled a "console" i have no idea

Get Rachet and Clank.

Everything else sucks.

Thanks!

The 80GB isnt completely software emulation. It has some of the chips unlike the US 60GB model that has all the chips.

Here is a link to check the compatibility status of each model
http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus
The compatibility list hasnt been updated though for a long time. The emulation has been improved since the updates.

The European 60GB model is similar if not identical to the US 80GB MODEL in terms of emulation. Mine used to have some minor problems with games such as FF12 for example but it has now been fixed.

There are no real disadvantages (excluding the emulation) unless you are a tech geek. The 40GB model has 2 USB ports instead of 4 and it doesnt have the Memory Card readers (Memory stick duo and things like that) presented in the other models but a USB stick does the trick.

Here is a complete list of features and differences
http://www.edepot.com/playstation3.html#PS3_Model_Differences

I think that the 40GB models also consume less energy than the older models. I am not sure about the 80GB one though

Personally I d go for the 80GB for backwards compatibility

Consider MGS4, Uncharted, R&C, GT5P, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Heavenly Sword.
I don\'t know if you already have GTA4 on XBox360...and if you like arcade-racing, you may get Grid for PS3(which is the best version) if you don\'t own a very very powerful PC.

PlayStation 3 40GB w/ Bonus $100 Gift Card

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10039674

Then with the gift card get GTA4 & MGS4 and your total will come to $420.  That\'s what I\'d get if I didn\'t have a 60gb right now.

It\'s out of stock but it sounds like Best Buy is matching this deal.

Would the two less USB ports be that big of a deal? What are they used for? Like I said, I have a 1 year old PS2 so the backwards compatibility isn\'t a big deal. Also, I don\'t feel like buying the adapters for the PS3 to use PS2 equipment.

Oh, I\'m not really thinking about games just yet. Only two I\'m getting when I get it is GTA4 and MGS4

Yea.  Re-read my other post & check the home theater thread. :)  Picked one up when T5: DR was online.

You\'ll primarily use them for charging your controller.  I use mine for that, a thumb drive for transferring files back & forth, and also for a PS2 USB adapter so I can use my joystick.

The 2 USB ports arent a big deal AFAIK unless you buy some USB peripherals (Eye camera) or use a USB HDD frequently that you are bored to plug and unplug every time you want to charge your controllers.
But then again you can plug your PS3 controllers on your PC\'s USB ports and charge them from there. And as far as media you can stream them from your PC to your console through a media server.

The 360 has 2 USB ports as well but there is no problem.

I have 4 USB ports on my PS3 and bought the EYE camera but 2 are almost always left unused

there is a big rumor going on that Sony as been working on a 100% software emulation for the PS2 games that will be added for free to the PS3 (it\'s a good move to have such a software when PS4 will lunch, it would be easier to have the PS1 / PS2 emulation out of the box).
can\'t see why not!
