Possibility for a new PS3 controller

http://kotaku.com/5016289/rumor-details-on-sonys-motion-controls-no-break+apart

Quote
An anonymous industry source has told Kotaku that reports of a "break-apart" motion controller for the PlayStation 3 that splits into two parts are not entirely accurate.

The control system, said the source, actually consists of a smaller-sized device that can attach to the body - and multiple devices are intended to be used in concert, such as wearing two on the hands to move a character\'s hands in-game, or four, on hands and feet at the same time to move a character\'s body.

Though the source admits the technology might have evolved since the last time it was seen, the source disputes the idea that any of these pieces merge to form a single controller. It is also unclear how the individual pieces will be packaged, whether individually or in sets.

Sony Computer Entertainment is working on a new controller for the PlayStation 3, which features the ability to \'break apart\' into two separate units, each of which contains an accelerometer for \'Wiimote-like\' motion-sensing functionality, GamesIndustry.biz understands.

It\'s not clear when the pad will be officially announced, but it is believed that working units have already been supplied to certain developer partners, according to sources.

The potential for new game types to be developed with the additional motion-sensing functionality should open up the PlayStation 3 to the sorts of gaming audiences that the Nintendo has been so successful at gathering with its Wii console.

I find this concept extremely interesting and promising if true. It should be more functional than the current motion sensing in the PS3 controllers

The only problem is that Sony should have gone with such a controller from the beginning. Mass support is a little difficult since the existing userbase is already in millions. There would be many that wouldnt be able to use the technology unless they are forced to buy another controller.

Despite that I like the concept since both gaming experiences can be featured on a game/controller and offers more flexibility to the developer.

You know why it\'d be more functional than the current PS3 motion control? Because that one is a gimmick and broken. It was a rush to replace vibration and try to keep up with Nintendo.

Too late in the game to launch another controller and expect developers to develop for it. Think of it like the failed broadband adapter.  You can\'t and shouldn\'t expect developers to support something that every single user may not have. Hell, you can\'t even guarantee that 50 percent of the market would have it.

or how about Guitar Hero or Rock Band ?

If people are willing to pay for something they will enjoy, then developer will follow. Heck, people pay 300$ for a Wii.
can\'t see why not!

I\'m now in my 2nd week with a PS3 + Sixaxis pad ; I am really NOT missing rumble all that much.

Don\'t get me wrong, i like rumble, but sometimes i find rumble feedback rather annoying.

Either way, the succes of this new item will depend big time on good game implementation, otherwise it\'ll bomb from start.

You smoking something?
You can\'t compare a controller built specfic for one game or genre, as compared to a controller that has to be SOLD and then hope developers develop for it.

Not even in same league.

although the dual shock 2 comment was in the same league... :p if you missed it

but even so don\'t think many ps3 players are too big into motion stuff anyways - its a nice thought but only game i found it not to be annoying was warhawk and folklore

You are right with your point. I am sure Sony is aware of this as well. It will be interesting to see how they will deal with it and how they will introduce the controller

That\'s why you shut it off :p

I like the rumble. I have no experience with the six axis and as of right now, I\'m not sure how much I\'ll like it or get used to it. I\'ll have to get back in a few weeks when I finally get my PS3 :)

Reminds me a lot of broadband for PS2. It kept getting hyped..Pushed back..Hyped and by the time they launched it, no one really wanted it no one , including Sony expected it to actually sell.

We old timers know this as pulling \'the Sega\'.

actually the broadband adapter didnt do too bad - it sold for games like socom and final fantasy xi...

it was the fact that other then those 2 games and sports titles no one really took advantage of it
