RC adapter (can\'t think of the right word) question
« on: June 15, 2008, 10:02:14 PM »
I have my ps3 connected to a pc 5.1 logitech system. But i only have the red and white cables connected to the front speakers (because the rc-to-pc plugs only goes to the green chord out of the yellow, black, and green). Then i click the matrix button to get the sound to come out of all of the speakers instead of just the front ones.

BUT, the sound is so soft on the back ones that its almost like they arent on..if i put them right next to my ear i hear it, and the static is almost louder than the sound, meaning the connection just isnt enough with the matrix.

So, is there a cable that has a red and white RC plug plug into a green, black, AND yellow cables? Then id be able to get sound out of all of the speakers and not use the matrix thing (which is what\'s making the back speakers so soft)

Ill give a picture in the next post since it\'s hard to put to words

hmm, why not just use the optical digital cable...that thing look a bit confusing to me.

Maybe  your speakers system doesn\'t have digital connection or something.

according to this pic:

there are front left and front right audio connection there.  I think the white cable is audio left and red is audio right, try connecting the white cable to the "yellow" input and the red cable to the "red" input...not sure why its yellow coded when its usually white coded for audio left.

those are for the individual speakers themselves. The adapter itself isnt that confusing when you look at the whole thing. Look at the photobucket picture, and take uot that middle wire that connects the red and white to the green..then put that adapter in its place.

and i wish the subwoofer had the optical digital cable, but no go.

have a feeling its going to be a bitch looking for it tomorrow. the shipping costs more than the adapter on amazon

oh btw,

that picture means you are converting 2 channels sound into 5 channels and that won\'t work out well i think...it won\'t sound natural as a true 5 channels signal.

I rather you connect the 2 channels into the 2 channels input and use the system effect like Pro Logic to process that 2 channels into 5 ch...

oh another thing, the ps3 only has 2 analog audio output, and doesn\'t support 5.1 analog audio output for the biggest reason being that it takes up a lot of space so they didn\'t bother with that.

in comparison HDMI and digital optical connector only take one cable and support multi channels like 5.1 ch.

So if your speaker system or a a/v receiver have digital connectors like HDMI or optical, you are getting 5.1 ch with your ps3 where available.  especially HDMI where it can support up to 7.1 ch "uncompressed" signal while optical digital are limited to lossy 5.1 ch.

depending on the converter box, there are quite a number of problems going that route.

First.  If the converter is poor, you will get a lot of audio noises.  say, if the converter can only process those audio signals with about 33 dB which is really poor and you will hear a lot of hissing noises on the sources.

CD quality sound has about 96 dB of S/N ratio (signal to noise ratio).  Assuming the PS3 convert the digital audio into analog and process it with about 72 S/N ratio for both audio channels and transferring it to the converter box, it will only process it in 33 dB S/N ratio...really poor there.  that\'s like 6 bits quality sound...

Second...converting a 2 channels into 5 by the converter box might mean make it sound weird...

Re-reading your posts again, you are saying you want to connect the red and white cable to the green cable...

By that I assume the green cable send audio left and audio right channels.  Which in then end is 2 channels.

So again, why not just connect the white and red cable directly to the subwoofer "yellow" and red inputs...that\'s that I am not really understanding.

So, either connect the red and white cables directly to the front audio left and front audio right and if your subwoofer has an audio effect selector like dolby pro logic or "tv sport", it will convert the 2 ch into 5.1 and process it internally.  Use it.  If that\'s what you want of listening to 5 channels.

Honestly, it would have been much easier and better if your sound system has a digital input like if the sub that has internal audio processor and connections.  Was surprised that it doesn\'t have at least optical digital input...

After a little reading:

if you connect red & white cables to front left and front right inputs.  Using the Matrix mode will convert 2 channels into 5 channels...so use the Matrix mode if you want 5.1 from 2 ch.

so this "Matrix mode" is like "dolby Pro Logic" effect or "tv sports" effect found on many a/v receiver.

the whole speakers system package is only $100, I can see why it doesn\'t have a digital input.  They omitted that to cut cost I suppose.

Unless, if you can spend some more dough on a 5.1 speakers system that have a digital input like optical input...

My bad, I just re-read your post and i just realized you did use the matrix button but the sound comes out too weak on the rear channels.  I think that similiar to how Pro Logic works too.  2 channels convert into 5.1, the rear sounds weaker, and the two front are a bit weak too...only the center is the loudest...shrugs...

unless there is a mode like "tv sports" that can send 2 channels to the same rear speakers too, and matrix it for the center...

so the best bet is to either get a speakers system that support a digital connection and at least support Dolby Digital 5.1 encoding.
