Just Ordered This...
« on: July 14, 2008, 09:08:08 PM »
So I just got off of Newegg ordering a new computer.  Been doing a lot of video editing and the rendering is killing me lately in HD.. so off to buy a new machine I went.

I got...

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4ghz - hoping to OC this badboy to 3.2 or 3.4

MSI P45 Neo3-FR Motherboard - nice overclocking board, I have a socket 939 MSI board now and it\'s been a rock solid workhorse.. so I\'m loyal.

G.Skill 4GB (2x2GB) 240 Pin DDR2 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit - Have G.Skill in my current AMD system and it overclocked nicely for me, these new DDR2 kits get rave reviews. Loyalty got to me again.

I also got a XIGMATEK 120mm CPU fan to keep my OC\'d Q6600 cool, this is the cooler that just won Toms Hardware CPU Cooler testing.. and it\'s only 26 bucks to boot :thumb: also got a new 500GB WD Sata hard drive & a new 550W Corsair PSU.  Will stick with my 7900gt for a few more months.. then will most likely get a 4870.. I have never owned an ATI card before, but I feel bad leaving AMD for Intel so I\'ll support them in any way I can.. it doesn\'t hurt that their 4xxx series cards are pretty sweet though :fro:

And after much consulting with a friend, I also purchased the 64 bit version of Vista Home Premium (to utilize my 4 gigs of ram) I plan on pumping it up to 8 gigs by the end of the year so not getting a 64 bit OS wasn\'t really an option.

So living near the newegg NJ warehouse I should get my stuff by wednesday.  And hopefully this will hold me over for a few years.  My current Dual Core Opteron has been running strong for almost 4 years now.. but I finally bit the bullet when I saw the performance nearly triple from what I have.. that and the prices are right..  I couldn\'t believe how cheap DDR2 memory is!

this is going to be a kick ass setup :)

Vista might be a burden for gaming when you\'ll play all the new games that will come down the road, but with this setup it\'s gonna be real speedy. I have here at work a Q6850 and 4gig of ram running 64bit Vista and it just run great. People often stare at my screen and "wow" the thing.
can\'t see why not!

vista = the suck, sloppy as fuck, have to pretty much strip away all the crap to get down to its core, and whats even more funny. When you do that, you use MORE ram.

I\'ll sit on XP untill it is dead.

My system went quite a bit faster when I went from 5 gigs to 9 gigs.  It was fine with 5 when I was editing Standard Def, but I pretty much edit exclusively Hi Def shows now and man did it suck the RAM.

I have a couple effects I lay in though that absolutely choke my system.  If you are into graphics you definitely have to buy as high end as you can or you spend way too much time sitting and waiting.

I just did a piece and I did some film look type stuff.  It was a 6 second clip and any change I made to it would mean 10 minutes of sitting.
I wear a necklace now because I like to know when I\'m upside down.

Got it up and running about lunchtime today.  It\'s super fast.. it boots up super quick.  Haven\'t had the chance to try overclocking it yet and also haven\'t had any problems with drivers or software yet.  Gonna install COD4 in a little bit and give it a go to see how the gaming side of things holds up.  Oh, and that 4 pin heatsink mounting thing that intel uses is shit.. AMD chips are way easier in that regard... but I finally got it in there good.

Now the task of slaving my old IDE drives and pulling some files I need to throw on my new sata drives and I\'ll be set.

Very happy so far :thumb:

Someone asked me the other day why I didn\'t hold out for Nahelm later this year... it ain\'t gonna be cheap, AMD with have nothing even close to this when it hits the market.  AMD needs to get their act together (seems like they have on the GPU side of things) or Intel will go back to gouging everybody like the good ole days. :(

Wish I had the desire to build a new system. After I built this one last year, I just have no desire to repeat it any time soon.  Thinking about buying an Apple laptop tho\'.

Getting that heatsink on was the worst part of installing my new stuff.  I hate that thing!

Got an easy overclock of 3.0ghz (from 2.4), but from what i\'ve read getting 3.0 is like a given.. i\'m going to see about maybe 3.2 or 3.4 in a few weeks.  Got the FSB up to 333.. and I know I can get more as getting to 3.0ghz didn\'t take any bump in volts anywhere.

just bought another 4 gigs of memory... for 8 gigs total.  Not that I really need it at the moment, but I had Premire, After Effects & Photoshop open at the same time the other night and the 4 gigs were filling up fast.
