The PS3 had a stellar video game lineup in 2008, but with 2009 in full swing many PS3 gamers will probably be wondering what new game will blind-side them this year. There are many big name sequels coming out this year that will obviously sell millions. However, I will take a look at the one game that I think will be the sleeper hit on the PS3.

There are many great games coming out on the PS3 that will probably sell millions such as: Killzone 2, God of War III, Uncharted 2, Infamous, Heavy Rain and Twisted Metal. However, the sleeper hit of 2009 for the PS3 is a game that just blind-sides you without even see it coming.

I have to say Quantum Theory by Tecmo is my pick for the PS3 exclusive sleeper hit of 2009. I talked about this game before comparing it to Gears of War. Gears of War currently stands alone in its own specific genre. Yes, I know there are other third person shooters with cover system such as Uncharted. However, Gears of War is known for its gritty gory violence and slow cumbersome beefy guys that can’t jump.

The reason why Gears of War is so good is because it is like a summer action flick. It has all the right ingredients for the adolescent teenager: cursing, gore, senseless violence and over the top macho bravado. In a similar way, Tecmo aims to provide competition to Epic by crafting a game that falls into the Gears of War category.  

In Quantum Theory, you control the massive gun-wielding dark hero named, Sid. The main character also has a female companion Filena (a la Resident Evil 5), that seems to be with Sid most of the time. Its a safe bet that there is a co-op mode considering the constant companionship.

Quantum Theory utilizes a unique cover system where the battle takes place in a ‘living tower.’ The environment is constantly changing to provide needed cover as well as taking away cover unexpectedly. The game follows the formula I outlined previously, with plenty of gore, and action. I’m sure it doesn’t hurt that the game features an attractive female heroine wearing next to nothing.

Another reason I am sure this game will sell well is because it is being developed by Keisuke Kikuchi, who became famous for the Fatal Frame horror series. The series on the PS2 is considered to be one of the scariest horror games out there. I have high expectations from Kikuchi, just by looking at his previous work.

I am sure this game will sell a few millions even if there is no deep story. Lets face it, there is a huge fanbase of gamers that will just about buy anything as long as it looks cool and is violent. Expect this game out on the PS3 exclusively late 2009.

Gears of War changed everyone’s life and expectations during this generation with its lusty visuals and action that required one to inject a couple of testosterone shots to keep them going all night long. PlayStation 3 owners felt jealous and incomplete then and have found enough solace in Killzone 2. Quantum Theory was the PS3 owner’s holler to Cliff Blezenski’s Gears of War franchise with a distinct Japanese flavor sprinkled to keep the imagination rolling and trigger happy fiends stuck to their favorite console.

However it so happens the Quartermann’s rumor mill on the pages on EGM’s final issue in circulation states a rather interesting footnote about the game.

Tecmo’s slick  PlayStation 3 exclusive shooter Quantum Theory might be getting a big boost when a larger co-publisher signs on to help push the game.

Now there can be either two possibilities that can be inferred from this excerpt, either Sony has offered to back Tecmo for the game just like Microsoft offered publishing assistance for the bloodfest Ninja Gaiden II. This would seem like the most logical explanation, since the game is a PlayStation 3 exclusive, and would also go on to show Sony’s commitment for third party developer support which has suffered a significant amount during this generation.

Why did you decide to make Quantum a PS3 exclusive?

 Makoto Shibata, Director: Japanese development tends to focus and specialize on particular hardware. When we were thinking about doing this we saw the PS3 as the hardware with the highest specs.

 
Tecmo started off doing a lot of Xbox 360 games. Now Tecmo is making more PlayStation 3 games like Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. Is Tecmo shifting towards PS3 development?

 
It’s not that Tecmo is shifting away from the Xbox 360. It’s about timing. From the beginning this was seen as a PS3 title and it happens to be coming out at the same time as Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2.

 
Are you afraid Quantum is going to be compared too closely to Gears of War?

 
The comparisons are OK. Resident Evil 4 is what started the TPS (third person shooter) genre. It’s a good example of shooting and moving. Gears took that further and is another evolution.


Was Resident Evil 4 the inspiration?

 

I’ve been playing first person shooters for awhile and Resident Evil 4 was the first game that worked with with a controller.

 

Is Quantum designed for the West first?

 
Yes.

 
Is Tecmo focusing on making more games primarily for the West?

 

It’s not like we’re focused on the West, but we do know the market is bigger. Games that sell over here, you have to invest in development and work hard to make a good game. We all understand that within Tecmo.

 There are games in Tecmo geared for the Japanese audience so it’s not that we’re completely focusing on the West.

 
How long have you been working on Quantum?

 

About two years.

 

What aspects can Tecmo add to the TPS genre?

 

We think we can add action to the TPS genre. The tower shifts and changes shape. Syd can climb up slopes and fight while hanging. Since Tecmo knows action games we can bring that to the genre...

this is almost so much of a copy of gears, that Im suprised they cant be sued for making this game.

I\'m still thinking about gettin\' this tho........it\'s a cheap clone no doubt, but it doesn\'t look or play that bad...and since i have no plans of getting a 360, this\'ll have to be my po\' man\'s gears...
