Is it dumb to rebuy movies on blu ray?
« on: January 20, 2009, 12:02:51 PM »
Im not a huge movie guy, at least in terms of purchasing. (since i watch a movie once and then dont really watch it again)

i only own children of men, first 2 bourne\'s, band of brothers, snatch, 300, and a handful of tv series (obviously only bought those movies for cheap) but im debating whether to spend 60 bucks on the bourne blu rays.

just feel a little dumb not having a big movie collection and rebuying one of the few i bought. already done it with blackhawk down

i actually do rewatch movies now that i have blu ray, just in the background. always nice to turn around and see iron man in blu ray

I think blu-ray will be a short-lived media (like laserdisks).

They are good now, but media is making a shift to downloadable content. Disks will be a burden. In the same way most of our music collections are now, our movie collections will be stored on a hard drive, or streamed to our tvs when we want to watch it.  On demand

imagine as the technology and quality of television gets better, you will no longer have to go out and buy a whole new packaged disk.  Instead you might pay a smaller "upgrade fee" to enhance the current version of the movie you own on your media server.

i definitly see a huge leap in downloadable content for the future, but i still think that it will be a supplement to physical discs for a long while..like, people want to own the disc version of the dark knight, but theyd have no problem just downloading a movie they\'d enjoy to watch.

i think there will be another upgrade to blu ray that involves phisical copies before we\'re mostly relying on downloadable content..which would be a while

Call me old school, but i will always prefer a physical disk as opposed to downloading it.

For an enthusiast, DL content is a while off.  Blue ray media is still huge for most people.

And laser discs were not that short lived.  I bought my player in 93 and gosh I used it I think until at least 98.  I can\'t remember when I got the DVD player.

Worth rebuying a disc?  I don\'t think so.  Not like there are that good of suplements to make it worth while.  Quality is much better, but not for the cost of rebuying something you already have.

Even if your TV isn\'t the best resolution-wise, you\'ll notice the color will be richer.  Forget the TV shows.  If you watch Bourne or whichever over & over it will be worth it.  Blu-ray will trump anything downloadable content will offer for the next several years at least.

It\'ll be a few more years before the internet can give us 1080p quality movies. As mentioned above, I prefer to "own" it.

So far I\'ve double dipped on:
Fifth Element
Road Warrior
Blade Runner
Christmas Story

At this point I can\'t see myself being tempted to watch any movie in DVD more than once.

The diffrence between DVD and Blu-ray is huge and in some case, for your favorite movie it might be worth it?

For myself, upscaled DVD vs. Blu-ray is a close match... at least close enough that it doesn\'t justify the money to upgrade a movie I already own to a Blu-ray.

There are even low-priced DVD (Transformer, 5$ on DVD vs. 28$ on Blu-ray (Canadian)) that for me, will do on DVD format.

As for digital movie / content it\'s really doubfull. Big studios like Disney has put a lot of money into blu-ray format and I\'m pretty sure they will want to keep this format for another 5-6 years. My high-speed internet account here only allow me 20 gig download.. I couldn\'t "afford" to move to digital download only ATM..
can\'t see why not!

Depends on your TV, I guess....coz upscaled DVD vs Blu Ray is not even close.

Jesus....I haven\'t paid for a BR disk over $25 except for Blade Runner with the 5 discs.

I got a good TV, and there is a good difference between upscale DVD vs BR. However, there are some movie that just aren\'t worth re-buying on BR, upscale DVD is good enough.
can\'t see why not!
