EA \'not ready\' to offer Natal support for Tiger Woods 11

Quote

Developer EA has stated that it is omitting support for Microsoft\'s Project Natal on Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 because it is not ready to employ the technology yet.

The latest game in the long-running golf franchise was announced last week and has been confirmed to support Sony\'s PlayStation Move controller, but not Microsoft\'s gesture-based control system for Xbox 360.

A spokesman for the developer told Joystiq that this is because it is "simply not in a position" to implement Natal functionality in the game, which is due to be released in June.

However, EA did not rule out using the device for future games in the series.

The EA representative said: "We are always evaluating new technologies and Natal would be a perfect fit for the Tiger Woods PGA Tour franchise."

Project Natal will be released in the holiday launch window of this year, while Sony\'s rival PlayStation Move is due out in autumn.

Sony: Move Targeted Equally At Core And Casual

Quote

SCE Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has told us that the company will cater equally to mainstream and hardcore tastes with its new motion controller, PlayStation Move.

We asked him during a recent interview how Sony’s focus was spilt between making Move an effort to appeal to a wider consumer base, and about making traditional games work in a different way.

“I would say 50:50,” he responded, adding that the company currently has “more than 20 teams working on Move”.

The executive went on to explain why he thinks Move will appeal be appeal to hardcore audiences.

“The precision of the Move system allows game designers to create games as simulations and games with much more depth than other motion-based game experiences. We are sure that hardcore gamers will appreciate and enjoy the challenge, with a much finer control over how they interact with the game and achieve greater success in those games.

“It was very interesting to hear comments by a certain journalist who tried Sports Champions’ table tennis, who clearly enjoyed playing the game but complained about the lack of perceived one-to-one control at certain times," he added. "During the GDC event we were showing the game’s entry-level mode, which includes a lot of assists to ensure that everyone who plays the game for the first time can enjoy it. However, we plan to have in the final game a more simulation-based mode, which will allow expert users to really try out their skills. That promises to be a hardcore experience.”

SCEE’s head of developer services, Kish Hirani, also told us that Move is highly relevant to traditional gaming markets.

“As a hardcore gamer, I would play those traditional games but I wouldn’t finish them on PS3 – I’d go back to PC because I like the mouse and keyboard,” he said. “When the firstperson shooter jumped on to console – and it’s something we only really jumped on to in this console generation – everyone hoped people would start hooking up a mouse and keyboard and start playing. But then they said: “Wait a minute, gamepads already work”. What’s exciting for me is that I can definitely see myself playing SOCOM all the way through with a motion controller, especially in singleplayer. So that’s an exciting market I don’t think anyone’s tapped into."

Asked whether players have found that pads strike a balance between accuracy and exertion, he continued: “Well, we’ve kind of solved that problem by having the secondary controller. If you play SOCOM 4, it’ll probably answer your question; all it’s doing is using the motion controller for what you’d normally use a mouse for. It’s a very personal thing, but I don’t think I’ll make that move back to PC now because I’ve never found a controller that easy for firstperson shooters, or especially RTS games.”

PlayStation MOVE Hands-on

Quote

NowGamer gets some serious hands-on time with Move and explains why it\'s quite the Wii-beater...

Is it a high-definition Wii? Yes, it is. There’s no way around it; PlayStation Move’s first crop of titles brings nothing new to the motion control party in terms of as-yet unseen game types. But, how could it? Nintendo’s fun-mining device has been chomping at that quarry wall for the best part of four years and frankly, if it hasn’t already unearthed every treasure to be found, we’ll eat our hats and give you our genitals.

But it’s important to define what exactly does set Move apart from Wii, even if the answers are obvious; power – raw, high-definition power – accuracy on every possible plane of movement, and finally body-mapping; unlike Wii, Move utilises the PlayStation Eye to map your somatic movements in conjunction with those of your hands. What this breaks down to in real terms is a more coherent, cemented experience than anything we’ve previously felt while Nintendo-bound, even if the concepts themselves range anywhere from a faint non-directional whiff of originality hanging in the air, through to ideas so ‘old-hat’, the devs might have dug them up at Sutton Hoo. Bit of archaeologist humour there. Indiana Jones got it. And he’s cool.

“as a description, ‘intuitiveness’ doesn’t make the grade, where ‘superintuality\' just about does”

So now come join us on a text and video odyssey, where we ritually slaughter the pig of ignorance, while fuelling the hype-furnace just enough to sizzle the bacon of excitement.

Hardcore: SOCOM 4

SOCOM 4 could have gone two ways. Either the crowbarring of a brand new control system into such an established set of mechanics as those we expect to find in a third-person tactical shooter would feel as awkward and flaccid as a recently dead porcupine, or it might bring a new animal to the party altogether. The design ethos of Natal – according to the Microsoft PR whiz kids – is to remove the ‘barrier’ created by the presence of a physical controller; the difference being analogous to dry-humping either with, or without pants.

What’s interesting is how easily Move manages this in the case of SOCOM 4. It really was a matter of seconds before the skills we’d learned from Wii, Gears Of War, using a TV remote, whisking an egg, or waving a sausage at a friend to lend greater weight to our words, came to fruition. Although the game is far from easy, mastering its controls took seconds.

Aiming was taken care of as you would expect; moving the Move, moves the reticule, while the edges of the screen provide a soft push zone in which you can spin your viewing direction up, down, or through 360 degrees. At first, aiming is tough, but not in a Wii sense – you know, where you point at a part of the screen and the reticule attempts to follow an imaginary house-fly fiercely protecting a tiny crumpet – but in an accuracy sense. Such is its pin-point precision, you could shoot the hair off a dog’s back if only your touch were delicate enough. With gripping of the trigger button on the accompanying navigation controller (Nunchuck), pulling your character into cover, it all feels very natural and great fun.

Our only reservation so far is how long this may stand up to more than a ten minute blast, especially since SOCOM has substantial leanings toward online squad play.

Now I play in a home theater in the dark.  I understand the control will be able to be seen since it glows, right?  But how\'s the thing going to see me?  And I\'m not standing up to play freaking SOCOM for hours.

the pricing is ridiculous with these things

The thing with the ball is like 50, and the other one is 30....but some games need 2 of the ones with the ball on it.

guarantee some people are going to buy one of each for christmas and a game that needs 2 lollipop controllers and be SOL

Racket Sports heading to PS3 with Move support.

Quote

Ubisoft has revealed plans to bring former Wii-only title Racket Sports to the PlayStation 3 with full PlayStation Move functionality later this year.

The publisher confirmed that the PS3 version will feature enhanced visuals, plus "unprecedented realism and pinpoint gameplay mechanics" that will apparently bring every swing, serve and other associated movements to life from the comfort of your living room.

Racket Sports will feature an assortment of games to indulge in, including tennis, table tennis, beach tennis, badminton and squash. Look out for the PS3 version on store shelves in late 2010.

R.U.S.E Move Impressions

Quote

Pointing, gestures, and the light-up bauble have all been integrated in Ubisoft\'s World War II strategy game.

While we\'ve already seen what Ubisoft\'s upcoming WWII-themed strategy game R.U.S.E. looks like when played on a $20,000 touch-screen table, the setup is far beyond the monetary reach of mere mortals. The cheaper alternative is to use Sony\'s motion controller Move, which Sony announced would be supported at this year\'s Electronic Entertainment Expo. We sat down with the game\'s senior producer, Mathieu Girard, for a look at how the controller handles.

What\'s New: Though Move support was added to R.U.S.E. long after development was under way, it has been tightly integrated into the game\'s mechanics. The Move controller acts as a pointer, allowing you to highlight a group of troops, issue commands to them, or navigate menus in much the same way a mouse is used in PC real-time strategy games. Gestures have also been implemented; a swift swipe to right of the screen brings up the menu where you can select your troops with the pointer or via the analogue stick on the navigation controller. Zooming also gets the gesture treatment, where pushing toward the screen zooms into the map, while pulling backward zooms out. The light-up ball doesn\'t get left out of the action either; it turns red when you\'re hovering over enemy troops and green when selecting your own. Most commands can be performed using just the main controller, though Girard informed us that the navigation controller makes some commands easier to access, giving you quick shortcuts to the most frequently used ones.

What\'s the Same: R.U.S.E. still looks as great as ever, allowing you to sweep effortlessly from high-level battle-top views to detailed animations of your troops in the heat of battle. There\'s also a lot of game on offer, with a 15-hour single-player campaign, 20 maps, online play, and a vast array of unit types from which to choose. Though controls have been simplified and tweaked for the console versions, Girard assured us that R.U.S.E will still be a fully featured RTS, complete with a level of depth on par with the best on the PC.

What Impression the Game Made This Time: Though we weren\'t able to get hands-on time with the Move, from what we saw, it has been well integrated into the game. The gesture and pointer controls seem like a natural fit for an RTS, adding a level of fluidity that sometimes is lacking when using a standard pad. Zooming, menu, and swiping gestures all appeared to work accurately, without having to repeat motions to get commands to register. It remains to be seen how well the controls will work over long periods of play, particularly given the lengthy campaign matches that can take hours to complete. We asked Girard if Kinect support would be coming to the game, but sadly, it looks like Xbox 360 users will have to make do with the standard pad. He told us that it had been looked into, but given the issues Kinect has with players sitting down, it would be too tiring for them to stand up for the long periods of time matches can take.
