Doesn\'t everyone in Japan already own this system?
December 8, 2000
December 8, 2000 was a big day in Japan. Sony\'s new model PS2, which features a DVD Remote control and updated DVD drivers went on sale, and was joined by the Game Boy re-release of the mega popular Dragon Quest III. So is it any wonder that the nation was struck with somewhat of a buying frenzy?
Famitsu.com is reporting that both items were popular enough to draw lines hours in advance at videogame stores in Tokyo\'s Akihabara, Ikebukuro and Shinjuku districts, and no doubt in other areas as well. The site mentions one store in particular, Shinjuku\'s Yodobashi Camera, as having 100 people lined up. The store ran out of the new PS2 systems by 1:00PM, although obtaining the Enix remake of Dragon Quest was a bit easier.
The site also mentions that many gamers were purchasing a PS2 system with a new 8Meg memory card (the system doesn\'t include this, as the DVD drivers are now hardware-based) along with Dragon Quest III for the Game Boy. Who says Japan doesn\'t celebrate Christmas?
