AS you said Living-In-Clip, The psx had 2d fighters. The system only had 1 meg VRAM. The ps2 has 4 vram. 32meg main mem. I\'m sure this won\'t be a prob. The saturn had more Vram then psx. Yet it had 2d fighter with TAG modes like Streetfighter VS x-men etc. This will be no problem. The ps2 can handle 2D with no problems.
