nvidia buys 3dfx.......3dfx is dead.
« on: December 15, 2000, 02:43:48 PM »
"Upon signing the definitive agreement, NVIDIA has agreed to loan to 3dfx $15 million for working capital, which will be credited to the cash portion of the purchase price. In addition, 3dfx and NVIDIA have agreed to stay the patent infringement litigation between them through closing of the transaction, at which time the suits will be jointly dismissed with prejudice. Assets included in the transaction include all 3dfx intellectual property and chip inventory as well as certain other assets. In addition, upon signing the definitive agreement, 3dfx transferred to NVIDIA the ``3dfx\'\' and ``Voodoo\'\' brand names and trademarks"

well i guess 3dfx just did\'nt have the money....i guess the PC graphics market is now a monopoly in favor of nvidia.

. I\'ve said it before and I\'ll say it again, in terms of ingenuity, exclusivity, and console competition, X-Box brings nothing to the table except a fat wad of cash and some rehashed PC components wrapped with a DC controller and a plastic black box.----RYU

This may be good. We may end up with Chipsets that support both 3DFX, OPENGL and DIRECT 3D with all the trimmings that u get from 3DFX cards etc.

I wouldn\'t mind having a geforce/3dfx card. :D

But NVIDIA just make the chipsets for cards. They don\'t stop other developers making graphics card.

almost every developer today agrees...glide is dead.

nvidia is now the microsoft of the PC graphics arena.

3dfx has NOTHING now(they gave it all to nvidia) and nvidia will not put it\'s own chips to shame if they give us rampage.

this is a sad sad day....we have a microsoft-mini-me now...may god have mercy on our souls:(

Well this put to rumors to rest about Sony actually getting 3Dfx.From what it looks like Nvidia will be the Microsoft of the Videocard market.

ATI better have one hell of a chip in the readeon(sp)3 and COST LOWER than what the NV20 will...i fear nvidia will ripp-off everyone(the 400$ a chip days might be coming back)...

god i hate monopolys...that is why sony, nintendo, sega must do everything possible to stop xbox.

NP... you seem to forget that there is a video car market outside of the highend user.  ATI is very strong so there is nothing of monopoly there.

Yep vid card prices will get high ATi isn\'t enough of a competition to start a price war.
S3 is gone,3Dfx is gone.I hope BitBoys will hurry up and get their card on the market.I want competition god damnit.
Allthough this will mean we will start getting some super vid cards.
I\'ve always preferred nVidia over 3Dfx though.

I kinda had a soft spot for 3Dfx (have a VooDoo in my Comp right now) and was kinda hoping Sony to atleast partner with 3Dfx to make the PS3.Nintendo have ATI,Microsoft have Nvidia and Sega have Videologic, I was kinda hoping Sony will too partner with a big graphics card company (3dfx) to help develop there next console (PS3 or whatever else it may be called). But I guess Sony will custom make there graphic chip again (GS3) or partner up with another lower graphic card maker down the line (Matrox etc...).

Frankly, I think Nvidia deserve the success they have today because they\'ve simply been ahead of the pack for the last few years with their products in terms of technology and marketing strategy. 3dfx have been giving us nothing but minor revision of their cards the last few years with nothing particularly exciting and their final gimmick with the T-Buffer was nothing but gimmick. We\'ve seen motion blurring done in many games on many platform before prior to this and it\'s hardly something to shout over.

Still, it\'ll be bad for the industry with one less major player in the Market. ATI is now the closest thing to competition we\'ll actually have. As for Bitboys, I hope they can live up to their hype!

Go ATI! (I have no real basis for this support, my chipset is a Nvidia TNT2, but ATI\'s head offices are a 10 minute drive from my house and I know people that work there)

My first 3D accelerator was a Voodoo 2 (12 meg), I bought it specifically for Fifa 99....what a bloody let down (the game, not the card).
