Is the system shortage really that bad?
« on: December 17, 2000, 04:29:23 PM »
Most people I know who really wanted one or even would have bought one before christmas managed to get one.  Also, I have a feeling gamecube won\'t make it untill 2002. If this turns true that\'ll give it 1 year on x-box and 2 years on gamecube (2 years on xbox if you count it launching in japan.  Even if gamecube isn\'t late it\'s not whats going take ps2 sales cause it apeals to such a different crowd of consumers. What do you guys think? Do you think the system shortage will really hurt sony that bad? Damn, next years going to be one exciting year for us gamers.

Where\'s my PS2, Sony? :crying:

The PS2 shortage is not that bad. 500,000 is the most consoles EVER shipped at a launch. Sega shipped 350,000 DCs, and there wasn\'t any demand. So, it\'s not Sony\'s fault, it the consumers. Same thing happened when Nintendo released the super famicom in Japan. It was $300. Whenever a console comes out, everyone bitches about the price. Sony\'s console is just succsessful. I was #37 in a line of 450+ people, and I got my Ps2 (the store had 198 Ps2s)

animal mother is correct...its not SONY\'s fault but yet again it is kinda their fault..its all SUPPLY and DEMAND..

i was number 5 on line and the store ONLY received 20 PS2\'s

i managed to pick up another 3-4 more PS2 systems from my job at EB..and now its all gone...i sold 25 PS2\'s in 1 day...and 10 the next day..boy is my paycheck going to be big because i get 20% of the 2 year warranty [$50] that we have for the PS2 bundle pack

well, luckily, i was able to squeeze myself into harvey norman for one of the last five ps2 stock, until the new one\'s arrive. I live in new zealand... not "extremely" too much hype here so there still 4-5 ps2 around each store..although some are already sold out, still alot of stores still has them...i think the ps2 release at my country in 12/12 or something..

If there wasn\'t any demand, then who in the hell brought 350,000 of \'em?

Tha explains a lot!!  I knew they got a cut, but no wonder.   They always give you that guilt trip, blah blah blah...  10 bucks is a nice cut if you sell quite a few of them.

VP got you there animal.  Who bought \'em all?  Also, something for you to chew on:  The Playstation sold 40 million in the US.  The Saturn sold 1 million and then died.  Sony could\'ve released a dry llama turd with two controllers and no game library and sold out of all 500,000.  So I wouldn\'t brag about that.  As I\'ve pointed out before, that\'s one of those REQUIREMENT vs Accomplishment things.  Sony was required to do well after the PSX\'s phenomenal success.  DC\'s sales are an accomplishment in the face of Saturns failures.  Release a system to follow up the miserably selling Saturn with no big name franchises at launch and no television marketing to speak of.. and STILL shatter records by selling 3 million in your first year.  THEN you can brag.  Why did 3 million people buy the DC in it\'s first year?  Marketing?  Um, no.  Excitement over last gens system?  Um, no.  Big name franchises?  Um, no.  Huh.  Guess it was the games.

As far as the PS2 shortage, it\'s not so much bad supply as it is too good of a demand.

Not that bad? Not that bad?! NOT THAT BAD???!!!!!!!
Maybe for you. You already have one! Let me tell you, when you have realtives in 2 states trying to get you one, and you still don\'t have one, its pretty bad, when you have an Onscan program on your computer checking 6 different websites every 5 minutes, and you still don\'t have one, its bad, when you enter PS2 giveaways everyday, and you still don\'t have one, its horrible, when you call 8+ stores every 30 minutes, and you still don\'t have one, its HELL!

Wow! Now THAT\'S what I call HELL...  :burn:
I feel for you, Snake.

It looks like whether you have a PS2 yet or not comes down to luck.

And Animal, how early did you have to get in that line to be 37th out of some 450 people?? If you were there for a whole day, that would be pretty extreme for most people.

Just for reference, I got mine at Amazon using Onscan to notify me. I\'d suggest you have an account already setup so you can get through checkout as fast as possible. It\'s been suggested that the PS2 is not actually reserved for you until you actually finalize the purchase. I remember somebody saying they had one in their "shopping cart" at some online retailer and by the time he got to the "buy" screen it was gone. That was just one instance though.

Good luck! :)

In terms of hurting PS2 sales in a way that impacts the overall sucess of the system I doubt we will know that answer for a few years.

I just had to have one of the damn things! I got there at 5:00 the day before...

"If there wasn\'t any demand, then who in the hell brought 350,000 of \'em?"

Sega shipped 350,000 Dreamcasts. not SOLD them on the first day. Sony sold out all 500,000 Ps2s in the first 24 hours. It\'s the CONSUMERS FAULT
