When a PS2 disc drive is possessed
« on: February 19, 2023, 08:40:31 AM »
I uploaded this video like a month or so ago to my YouTube channel. This PS2 had a funky disc drive and as I opened it up and kept working on it, I found more and more issues from a failed repair attempt by the previous owner. This video is a bit long but it's a fun watch (and one of my more popular videos!) to see how I managed to save this PS2 for a new owner.

I dunno. Bizio buried that post and I don't remember what it was and I'm too lazy to click page 2 :) I do electronics repairs on my YouTube (with a focus on game consoles and accessories) so it was probably something related to that lol.

here is the link to your previous thread that you posted in January 7 of this year.  its has the same video.

https://psx5central.com/community/index.php?topic=45612.0

maybe you forgot and made a new thread again.  no problems though. :)

but i did get some big laughs of the topic you made for this thread that you titled it "When a PS2 disc drive is possessed."  i thought you were making fun of me because its relatable to me being possess many of the times.  i love your sense of humor, lol.

Thank you! And yeah. I'm sure I can fix them lol. I'm working on an Xbox now with no power. Opened it up and found 5 swollen capacitors. So I have those on order lol. I should have recorded that one. Oh well. I have 3 other Xboxes waiting for repair that have a myriad of issues I can record. I upload videos when I can. I unfortunately have no upload schedule now and it's basically whenever they're done lol. This whole having a job thing really puts a damper in what I like to do hahahaha. But I'll be finishing recording a Dual Shock 3 video tomorrow night and should only take me a few days to edit it.

Great !
If I knew that years ago, I would have contacted you for my PS3, which died suddenly during a furious online co-op Match at Uncharted2.
I would love to be able to fix consoles, but this requires knowledge and practice that I don't have, it must really give so much satisfaction to get your hands inside and fix the hardware.

I'm looking forward to see the Dual Shock 3 video ;)

I probably wouldn't have helped you years ago lol. Not out of unwillingness, I only got into console repair when I got laid off during Covid and had nothing else to do for the year and a half I was unemployed. But yeah, that's the thing about learning the repairs. Takes time and practice and research. Also takes trial and error. I definitely have a box of oopsies but you learn from those mistakes and you can't be afraid to mess up a console here and there along the way. It's actually one reason I started my YouTube. 1) I've always wanted to put my film degree to work to some level. 2) I try to show people the common and not so common issues with these systems and how anyone can really fix them. I've had multiple people comment that they were able to fix their systems by seeing my videos so I consider that a win lol. I'm serious when I say most of the consoles (especially disc drives) are repaired by doing a clean. Laser replacements is another big one that anyone can do. And capacitors on Xboxes is very common which is cheap and easy to fix. The Dual Shock 3 I just recorded was repaired with only a phillips head screw driver.

The problem I'm having now in making some good money from my refurbishments is the explosion of retro gaming recently. You'd think that was a good thing but before I could buy a lot of broken PS2s on eBay for around 10-15 dollars per console after shipping and taxes. and I was able to sell a PS2 for around 60. Even with parts that was a good profit margin of like 30-40 per console. Now those lots are going for about 30+ per console and still selling them for about 60. Add in the parts and that profit is slim. I think what's happening is there's been an influx of people buying them to fix and sell them and not realizing how little profit is in it right now. And with more inexperienced people buying these things hoping for a quick buck in the retro market, prices are going up of these broken systems. I'm hoping as people realize it they drop out and the prices of broken consoles drops. For now I'm just gonna keep doing what I'm doing and put out a quality product and after the wedding I'm gonna set up a website and focus on repairs. There's big profit margin in that :) Especially since I've had multiple people comment on my YouTube looking for me to repair their system. The YouTube and my website/online store can go hand in hand. The goal is to start my own online store and get off eBay. Their fees are crazy!
