"Besides, there are VERY few movies released on DVD that actually have 6.1 channel soundtracks (yet, anyway......)."

"There are well over 50 DVD\'s that contain DTS soundtracks..."

mm, DTS does NOT mean 6.1 atomatically !!!
Mainly DTS is 5.1 like DD !!!

(Don´t ya know, or did I get you wrong ?)

dts = 5.1
dts-es = 6.1

mm I doubt you found a dts-es compatible receiver for $340.  The Denon 5800 & 3801 do this and they cost around $2500 & $800 respectively.

SDDS is great.  I\'m actually glad Sony opted not to bring the format to Home Theater; then we\'d have to buy 8 speakers! :D

Aww.... **** ES!

I\'m with mm on this ES issue.  A really good system don\'t need no stinking ES!  ES is just another Lucas brainchild gone rampant through the digital soundtrack world.  I hope it goes away.

I agree with DolbyTone on the excellent quality of SDDS. We never had problems with it at our theater, but that seems to be the exception rather than the rule. I don\'t think anyone mentioned this, but Jurassic Park in DTS actually has less features than the Dolby Digital version, because it does take up more space on the disc.

mm- if a light came on that said dts-es then you would have dts-es. :)

Considering you bought your receiver over a year ago you do not have dts-es.

DTS Announces DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 Audio Standard

June 15, 2000 – DTS today formally announced a new program for the implementation of the DTS-ES Extended Surround Format for home theaters. The DTS-ES program includes the introduction of the new DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 format, which employs a new, proprietary technology for the playback of discrete, 6.1-channel content from DVDs and CDs. This latest innovation from DTS is the first of its kind, and it elevates the performance standard for playback of the DTS 6.1-channel Extended Surround format introduced in motion picture theaters last year. Content mixed especially for DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 will be available later this summer.

The new Denon AVR-5800 A/V Surround Receiver is the world’s first audio component to feature DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 decoding. It is powered by two Analog Devices SHARC® 32 bit floating point DSP processors—the most advanced DSP devices on the market—along with 16 of Analog Devices’ reference AD-1853 24 bit/192 kHz DACs. This is the first DSP implementation to support the DTS-ES program. The new AVR-5800 A/V receiver also features DTS-ES Matrix 6.1, DTS Neo:6, Dolby Digital®, THX™ Surround EX® and Dolby® Pro Logic® decoding, as well as THX 5.1 and 4.0 post-processing, a variety of additional DSP modes and stereo audio. The Denon AVR-5800 will begin shipping August 2000.

Do you even have speaker outputs on the back of your receiver that say rear center?

mm... just for you !
DTS is 5.1 just like DD !!!!!!!
If a DVD support DTS and your Receiver can handle it also, then why on earth don´t you use it ?????? It is simply better than DD !!!
You don´t need a Rear Center especially for DTS !!!!!!!
Even with DTS ES or DD 6.1 you don´t need a Rear Center.
If you don´t have one, then you will have the same sound like 5.1 !!
So what ?

Why would you hate an extra speaker in the back that is crazy. I do not think you have a capable sytem or speakers so it should not matter. I just got the Denon AVR-3801 and it\'s amazing. DTS sounds great.

mm don\'t need no stinking ES if his system is set up properly.  Only a fool lives by the addage that "more is better" and this applies to sound systems too.  Just the fact that ES technology was inspired by George Lucas and THX should tell you that.

i bought my DTS receiver xmas of 99

would scanning the receipt make u feel better?

so whats the difference betweem DTS and DTS - ES?

gladiator DVD [example] is DTS - ES.  if i had a normal DTS [if such a thing exists], would it not play the sound? it does.
