Dolby Digital playback help for DVD\'s
« on: December 30, 2000, 04:33:19 PM »
Hey guys and gals

I bought a new surround system but when I put in Dolby Digital DVDs it doesn\'t switch my receiver over to Dolby Digital mode it stays in Pro-Logic mode

I originally thought my new receiver had a problem but I watched Titan AE on pay-per-view which was broadcast in Dolby Digital though my DD capable Satelite receiver and it worked fine.

So being an amature DVD type person what am I doing wrong ????

I know you guys know so spill da beans

puh... where to start ?!
1. Allmost all DVDs own a Soundoption were you can chose between DTS, DD or Prologic... try it in the DVD menue
2. As for the PS2, you have to switch the DD, DTS and Mpeg sound to ON in the setup for playing it right...
3. Did you make the right connections (optical or coax cable) ?

Ok I haven\'t been able to locate the DD option in the DVD menu, but I\'ll look again

Also I thought there was only a surroung on/off option in the PS2 setups. not DD/DTS/Mpeg option that you are mentioning,

In the DVD menue screen, there must be an option like "Language/Sound" check it out... There must be something like:
Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1 or Dolby Surround !

If the Movie is running, press the Stop Button and search for the Setup Screen (I don´t know what they called it in english... I do only have a german PS2 for rent :D )
After entering it, you can change the Picture (16/9, 4/3...), Sound (that´s what you need) and Parental Lock...
Switch all Sound Options to ON !!!

What about the OPTO Cable ??? Do you have one connected !!!???

Several of the studios actually default their DVDs to play in pro-logic and you have to go and change the language to 5.1...  I am talking about the menu on the movie, not the PS2...

This may be your prob..

There\'s three steps you have to take to get DD/DTS output to work with your PS2.

1. Boot the PS2 without a disc and choose System Configuration.  Scroll down to the "Digital Out" option and choose ON.  This will enable the output.

2. Now, power down and boot up the PS2 with a DVD movie.  Wait for the console to automatically start the DVD.  Press Select on the controller and select Setup from the menu.  Choose Audio Setup from there and make sure that "Audio digital out" is set to on.

3. This step depends on the DVD movie.  In the main menu of most DVDs, there is an audio setup menu that you can access to choose the soundtrack type.  A lot of movies will actually default to Dolby Surround (2.0).  Make sure that you have Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1 selected (depending on what soundtrack the DVD supports).

That should set you up.

well I figured out where I was F\'ing up

I had the PS2 set up right but when I hit the select button on the PS2 controller I\'d look for Audio options but nothin would happen. i found another set-up icon looks kinda like Luggage and my options where in there.

One last question what the hell is DTS ?????

Should I turn on all my options or just Dolby Digital ???

DTS-ES = 6.1

adds a rear center channel that is VERY annoying IMO
u must have a DSP capable of decoding this

erhm... yes mm, but that was not his question (btw: there also is DD-ES) !

DTS (also 5.1 like DD) is a newer Sound format !!! Not all DVDs have it, only a few...
It works without compression so the Sound is "richer" also your AV Receiver must be able to "understand" that signal !!!
The PS2 can handle it and if your receiver also does, you will have the Sound experience of your live... :D

YES, switch EVERYTHING to ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!
You then don´t have to worry about the Soundformat on your DVD... just choose the one you like !
My favorite is DTS !!! But in repeat, your RECEIVER must be able to handle the DTS Format -> look for the DTS Logo on it ! The same goes for the DVDs, if they have the DTS logo on it, then it´ll work...

HAVE FUN !!! THE AUDIENCE IS LISTENING... :D
(no, please don´t question me about THX.. )

Finaly, to make it short...
You must have a DVD with DD (and/or DTS).
You must have a DD (and DTS) Receiver.
You must have 5 speakers (and a Subwoofer).
You must have a DVD Player (PS2 :D ).
You must have a digital cable (Opto for PS2)
You must switch every soundformat/setting to ON.

And now, turn it loud !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Ok first of all, I forgot who said so, but DTS is a compressed signal, just not as much as Dolby.

SDDS, ah nectar of the gods if you can get it to work right.  It\'s a digital soundtrack using the least compressed signal of them all with the most digital information and eight truly discreet channels (L, LC, C, RC, L Surround, R Surround, and LFE) giving you five stage channels rather than the traditional three.

An SDDS signal doesn\'t share data between channels, when it\'s decoded, all the channels are discrete and have their own allotted bandwidth.  SRD and DTS both use some sort of data sharing to reduce bit rate (the SDDS bit rate is 2.3Mb/s, DTS is 1.2Mb/s and SRD is 320kb/s).

As I\'ve said before, SDDS to me sounds like a digital sound track with analog properties.  By this I mean that it tends to sound more warm and blended than the others.  Also, it seems to be really good at fooling you into thinking sound is coming from different areas of the room (where there are no speakers).  I swear, SDDS can make you think stuff is flying over your head, much better than SRD or DTS anyway.

I\'ll look through the manuals and if there\'s more neat info I\'ll relay it on to you all.

damn...
You are the first to help mm out... I was so close ! ;)

This was taken from a very good Home Theatre Sound Site...
mm, you will like it !!!   http://www.hometheaterforum.com/

"SDDS-8 uses two additional discrete front channels, for a total of 5 separate channels behind the screen, in addition to the two surround channels and the LFE.
SDDS stands for Sony Dynamic Digital Sound. Most major releases have a SDDS soundtrack encoded on the print, along with the DD 5.1 track, DTS time code and analog soundtrack. Unfortunately very few theaters actually choose to take advantage of this format, since it requires additional decoding equipment and two more speakers behind the screen. In my opinion, a good SDDS soundtrack, played back in a properly set up theater, can sound much better than either Dolby Digital or DTS.

Sony doesn\'t plan to ever make this format available to consumers; they intend on keeping it exclusive to movie theaters. They go into more details about the reasons for this decision (which actually make sense) in the FAQ, available on their web site. I just wish that more theaters would actually use the format..."
