Playstation2 DVD Error:
« on: December 31, 2000, 12:05:07 PM »
In the US release of the Sony Playstation2 there is a Major DVD-Rom
Error. This error is the fact that sonys dvd-rom cannot play Gold
buttom DVDs. At this time it may not seem like a big problem but in due
fact, the newest DVD\'s to hit the stores will all be gold DVD buttoms, casuing
your sony DVD-Rom addon, to be rendered useless. My thoughts on this are
that the DVD-Rom is pretty much a useless addon, maybe not now but will be
when the new DVDs arrive. Sony didnt take much time Creating this as you can
tell, and there are NO plans in any way of them fixing this error, a true
waste of money.

Sincerly,
Unsatisfied Customer

Yea i noticed but not all DVDS are gold buttom some are silver. even though 90% are gold. check out your local blockbuster to see the movie "scary movie" its in silver. And i just found out that the porblem may be "macvision" imputted into your VCR, the conflicts with the Ps2 anti-piracy chip.
do your research.

I\'m not sure this affects all PS2s, since mine works with both silver and gold bottom DVDs

There are obviously defective consoles out there though. Good luck with Sony tech support, they\'re sloooow.

I called SCEA technical support yesterday and they said that SOME gold bottomed DVD may not work in the PS2.  I posted on a earlier thread that I had a problem witht he Matrix.  I put in a gold bottomed DVD, Independence Day and watched it all the way thru.  Didn\'t miss a beat!!!!!! It must be a sporatic thing.  I did also get the Dolby digital to come on and I have it hooked up to a Dolby digital Sony reciever with Harmon Kardon separates and it sounds phenomenal!!!!

Happy New Years everyone!!!!

They do not just make DVD\'s gold, "just because", the dual layered discs are the only ones that have gold on the bottom. It is used because the laser and see though the layer and read the layer that is under it.

Also, from what I am hearing it isn\'t some "gold" problem, well, it kind of is. It sounds like most of these problems are happening when there is a layer change, which only happens on gold discs because they are the only ones with layers, duh. There are many players that have problems with layer changes. This is just something that we have to put up with. DVD technology is going though a kind of puberty. We just have to wait for it to develop.

I have this problem with Fight Club, however I found a way around it. I just have to turn the diagnostic mode on before I player it each time (if you need help on diagnostic mode it is on page 9). A pain in the ass, but if it lets me watch Fight Club, I\'ll be happy. Sony just better fix this in the DVD update.

I\'m still happy \'bout PS2 DVD -player. It\'s our first DVD -player and now is much used :)

It\'s just extra, and it was meant to be for DVD-games at first I think. Then Sony decided to add a movie-player to the same package.

Now Sega has a new marketing tactic: they sell DC and a decent DvD-player for the price of PS2 :)
