XBOX and a possible BIG problem?!
« Reply #15 on: January 04, 2001, 08:20:22 AM »
Hope this clears some things up:

Quote
IGN Xbox: Let\'s talk remotes. Can you go into the requirement for DVD playback?

J. Allard: A big piece of feedback we got back from people [regarding the DVD playback on the PlayStation 2]: one was with the experience with game controller rather than a movie style remote, which was a disappointment. They were let down and disappointed with the experience that was in the box. We got tons of feedback from people saying "put a remote for movie playback in the box. Do it right because we don\'t want a game controller." But a lot of gamers came back and said "you tell me that Xbox is all about games, and that Microsoft is all about games, and you\'re asking me about movies?" We sort of combined those two very vocal opinions and said "we\'re not going to put a remote in the box." If it\'s really true that people are buying it as a movie machine, and not a gaming machine, that\'s not really our objective with Xbox. Our objective is to deliver the best gaming experience possible. We combined those two pieces of feedback and said "the right thing to do is to make it a peripheral." People were totally comfortable paying the extra $20-30 bucks to get the remote, particularly if that meant that they could get one at Christmas for the hardcore gaming set, and get a better experience with a remote.

IGN Xbox: You can still use the controller as well, right?

J. Allard: No, you\'re going to have to buy a remote. You won\'t be able to watch a movie without buying the remote package, and I suppose we can also make it controllable by the controller, but the feedback\'s been really clear about that one.

IGN Xbox: So you\'re not just buying a remote, then.

J. Allard: It will unlock the movie playing capability of the box. We want to make it as simple as possible for the consumer. Whether it\'s a widget that you install somewhere or a disc that you install or something like that is to be disclosed, but it\'s going to be very, very simple.

IGN Xbox: This doesn\'t affect DVD playback for games though, just movies.

J. Allard: Right.

Just checking. A DVD option with the hardcore gamer in mind, or simply a way to avoid having to pay the DVD licensing fees on every Xbox console? You be the judge. We\'ll be digging deeper at this weekend\'s CES.

definetely controller ports. but either way, what\'s the BIG PRObLEM?

the design. now that I see it so clearly I gotta say that I\'m not that impressed. Still something I expected.

I\'m still not sure wich one would win the beauty competition. PS2 or X-box. Maybe PS2 because I like blue better than green.

1) Yes, they are USB ports and include all the benefits of USB ports.

2) They are custom and there is no way to plug computer peripherals up to them.

So they are both USB ports and controller ports but for the average gamer who doesn\'t care what USB means in terms of performance they are just \'controller ports\'.

Guess the ps.2 will be the console with the most possibilities with USB ports and a FireWire(aka iLink aka IEE1394) all the other console will just have their standard connectors.

Okay. So I have to pay for a friggin\' remote and whatever addon they decide. Because the controller wouldn\'t be comfortable?

Um. Who are they to decide for me? They say gamers decided, what gamers? Where did this come from?

Not USB ports was stupid. But, not when they can charge for those also.

Ugh.

I have a question. How much is this damn thing going to cost? Microsoft overprices everything it puts out. Just wondering if anyone heard anything.

Sorry if someone already said something like this. Im kinda new to the forums.

well... nobody knows
but people know if its over 300 its DOA
thats why they had to make the specs smaller so they can afford to release it cheaper

Well that\'s not what get\'s me upset. Every console out there, even the PS2, has proprietary controllers. What get\'s me pissed is that you KNOW anti-Sony fans will just let this pass without raising a stink about it. Yet when Sony says up-front that old PSX multitaps won\'t work with the PS2 (Which is understandable since they aren\'t built right for the Fully analong DS2), those bastards try to make it sound like Sony did that intentionally just so they could suck more money out of your wallet.
