XBOX and a possible BIG problem?!
« on: January 03, 2001, 11:48:06 PM »
are these USB ports?

if they are then there is no stopping MS. if they aren\'t then heck, MS have mad a terrible mistake!

think about it. if they are USB\'s then this thing will be able to plug into any device. you\'ll be able to plug in keyboards, cameras etc without any problems at all. seems like a great idea for such a console as this.

i hope they\'re not USB\'s the edges look too rounded!

I don\'t think they are, but I\'m sure it has USB ports on the back (just like the PS2 does).

no those arent USB ports, the DC has one just like that for all four of it\'s ports, but they are circles instead of ovals.

I doubt they are USB ports. Though what are the disadvantages if they are?

Looking at this pic, comparing it to my DVD-Rom tray, the X-Box is a decent size for a console. At least head on.

Sorry to disappoint you guys (really?) but those four plugs are actually USB Ports. They shaped it like that to prevent USB devices meant for Computers (or anything else but the X box) to be plugged in the X Box, might malfunction it or sumthin\'. Here\'s a link, look for the 16th and 21st line of the FAQ:

What malfunctions? If you don\'t have a driver for a device.. the device does nothing.. just like on a PC. If it runs on a Windows2k kernal, how difficult would it really have been to add in basic Mouse & Keyboard drivers? Not very difficult I\'m guessing. So I suppose all those PC FPS fans will just have to buy the KB & M combo from good ole MS instead of using their old ones. Heh, I wonder how long it\'s going to be before someone realizes they can make a quick buck by inventing a PC USB to Xbox USB converter?

Definitly controller ports. Not usb crap.

That design totally rocks.
I met him 15 years ago, I was told there was nothing left, no reason, no concious, no understanding and even the most rudamentory sense of life or death, good or evil, right or wrong, I met this 6 year old child with this blang pale emotionless face and, the blackest eyes, the devils eyes, I spent 8 years trying to reach him, and then another 7 trying to keep him locked up because I realised what was living behind that boys eyes was purly and simply evil.

They are of course controller ports, but doesn\'t Xbox use special USB connectors capable of 12 Mbit/s? I think that\'s why. So even though it\'s USB you can\'t connect the usual PC stuff - I think. ;)

Actually, I\'d prefer it if they were standard USB ports. It would be nice to be able to use old PC devices or shop around to find the cheapest price instead of having to buy it from MS or get some 3rd party crap.

BTW: Shadowflare.. some of the info on that site you posted is wrong. It doesn\'t say anything about the Xbox\'s controller ports being proprietary and it screwed up the PS2 vs Xbox compairison. Now it\'s PS2 that has DVD playback built in with Xbox having to have special software installed on the HDD. Also, if it\'s going to the length of saying that broadband will be a future upgrade to the PS2.. they should have put the HDD as a future upgrade as well since the modem and HDD will be one package that slides into the expansion bay in the back. No details on size were given, but I think I remember Ken Kuteragi saying that they\'d like the HDD to be in the "Tens of Gigs" range. (Which really translates into about 10-20). And lets not forget that the PS2 HDD is removable, allowing you to keep as much data as you want as long as you\'re willing to buy more HDD\'s.

They both have dvd. Will xbox have zoom, progressive scan etc is the question.

If so that would be worth purchasing a remote. this thing better be cheap. I hope its not like sega and the broadband adapter. o it will be inexspensive then whamo 59.99

to there are ways to give the illusion of AA,without having to take cuts in performance, and some developers are are taking advantage of themhowever ,until SOny comes up with a specific and easy ways to implement true AA that dosent take major hits on performance, you probably wont be seeing a huge number of games take advantage of it.

No, unless the decision has been reversed, the Xbox will not have DVD playback out of the box. You will have to buy the software & remote bundle seperately and then install it onto the Xbox\'s HDD before you can play movies.
