Former EA and Radical executives start up new game company, get license for PS2 development.

January 3, 2001

Taking gaming development into the present and ditching the stale ways of big corporations, a handful of smart former employees from EA and Radical have formed Moderngroove, a development house that aims to bring music to consoles in a completely different way. Why should you pay attention? The biggest reason is because Adrian Crook, the team leader of Sled Storm, EA\'s killer PlayStation snowmobile game, is on this staff, that\'s reason number one. Second, today Moderngroove announced today that Sony Computer Entertainment America has granted Moderngroove a license to create PlayStation 2 games.
"When evaluating potential developers, Sony looks for a high level of innovation coupled with the ability to deliver a great product," said Adrian Crook, executive producer of Moderngroove. "Our team is excited to be given the chance to prove as much on the most significant entertainment platform in the world."

Moderngroove is already hard at work on its first PlayStation 2 game, having received development stations in May. The game, which is more like music software, is called Moderngroove, and it enables PS2 owners to play more than five hours of original music from current DJs, while sprawling 3D backgrounds and niche film clips appear onscreen that move to the music. Anyone remember Baby Universe (PS) or the Virtual Light Machine (Jaguar)?

For a different kind of set of visuals, players can hook up a Webcam (using the USB port) which then brings your household, be it a dinner or a dance party, or whatever, into the machine for a newer kind of look. PS2 owners can also mix up the music via an MP3 player.

According to the Website, Moderngroove will release its first "pure music title" for PlayStation 2 this winter.

"The PlayStation 2 is a vehicle that will deliver truly interactive entertainment to the home," said Crook, producer and original concept generator on EA\'s Sled Storm. "It\'s the unique abilities of the PlayStation 2 -- broadband, DVD, USB -- that attracted moderngroove to the platform. For the first time, pioneering developers can build their dreams without compromise and that\'s exactly what moderngroove intends to do."
