What is the screen resolution of the PS2?

I know that when you play a DVD it can display at 720 horizontal lines. But when you play games can it display any higher than the traditional TV rez of 525 lines?

I\'m really looking forward to the x-box and it\'s ability to display games and web-content at the full HDTV capacity of 1080 horizontal lines. This is really going to be important when it comes to web surfing from your couch. Text legibility will be much better and your games graphics will rival those on your computer monitor.

Just imagine, all of those PC elitists not having the "my PC has sharper graphics" leg to stand on. HDTV gaming is truly gonn rock.

I would think that sony would have allowed their hardware to send out at least a 720 line signal. After all, the information on the screen is just polygons so it should make little difference right? I\'ve looked but I can\'t seem to find  this info anywhere.

I\'ve heard PS2 displays games at 640x244 or possibly 640x224, but I\'m not sure.

It\'s 640x480 interlaced which can be technically called 640x~240.

Anamorphic DVDs can be 720x480, but the horizontal resolution is the 2nd number: 480.  The NTSC standard is 525 scanlines for broadcasts but the actual TV itself can have more.  JVC\'s D-series sets display 825+ lines.  They just have an internal line doubler which can fill in the extra lines if needed (pls correct me if I\'m wrong).

When or if Sony upgrades the ps2 to progressive output we can all enjoy a 720x480 progressive signal if you have an HD-ready TV.  This still can\'t compare to top-notch graphics cards outputting a 1600x1200 progressive signal.  But it is arguable since most would rather play games sitting on a couch in front of a big screen rather than sitting 2 feet away from a 21" monitor.

Are the HDTV already out in large numbers? Can you tell me some brand and type of the HDTV, cuz I\'ve heard a lot about HDTV yet I\'ve never seen one. Maybe I did but didn\'t realize it.

Mitsubishi, Toshiba, Pansonic, and Sony are showing great results in the HDTV field.  Mitsu and Tosh are the best bang for your buck.  Best Buy should have a display setup showcasing HD video, which is amazing to say the least.

They start at around $2,200 and can cost $15,000 for a really nice DLP set.

here is a pretty good source of info.  There is a growing amount of content out there now.  Almost all of the shows on CBS are now HDTV.  It\'s too bad I don\'t watch any of them.  I got it mainly for sports.  Watching Augusta in all it\'s glory.  Watching football, Tennis.  It\'s just going to kick ass.  What I have seen so far is amazing.  It\'s great having a 96 inch image with no scan lines to speak of.  I actually put myself through watching half of Judging Amy last night just to see it\'s brilliance.  NYPD Blue is now in HD, but I can\'t stand the videography in that show.

wow 300 watts, i dont think i would use that amount of power though. but for $70 which is abou £55 for me its a good price. im thinking of getting the ps2000 by creative labs.

how could you tell if a dvd player have progressive scan or not?  does it use component signal or progressive signal cable?

Actually, to those who don\'t know, the PS2 is capable of HD resolution, just not the highest output, but its very unlikey that it will ever display it. PS2\'s rez varies from game to game. Most games output the standard 640x240, but in rare ocassions the rez actually drops, like in Ready 2 Rumble 2, its actually 512x240, which sucks, but at least the game is cool. The higest rez launch game is, Summoner, but it only runs @30fps. In the future the should be able to boost the rez to at least DC quality without taking a performance hit.

If you\'re asking about which is the higher video mode that the PS2 supports, it\'s 1280x1024( just look here ).

The problem is that the developers are using the PS2\'s video caché like a standard VRAM. This way they hardly have enough storage to make high resolutions with high quality textures at the same time. Later on, when they start to stream the textures and use mpg2 compression, we\'d expect higher resolutions with high quality textures.

Hmm, I heard that PS2 could do up to 1028x760, if the game supported it. I red it somewhere on IGN.
