PS2 Networking Plan! *rummor*
« on: February 03, 2001, 09:39:32 PM »
SONY plans to release a 2-in 1 package (HDD and 56K modem) for the PS2 in 2-3 months. It will be priced around $150.

Untill sony get a broadband network up they are going to release the 56k version beacuse obviously not everybody has BB. This is where the sega stuff comes in, as you may have heard sega is working with sony with the online network... you know the rest.

This is speculation on my part, but it would make sense that you could "take out" the 56k modem and "replace" it with a ethernet drive.

This is for the
USA ONLY!
this is not the japan plan.. its only BB there :)

Rembember this is a rumor, but makes perfect sense :)

Yep, both
good news is, not patches for fixes, beacuse not everybody has a hardrive.
It should be great :)
with support though sega, (this could mean PSO on ps2 in 3 months)
Sony can get a 56k network up soon, almost for march
then get a Broadband network up for fall.

Another advantage for the ps2, all people can play
I talk to many people over 56k still that can\'t get broadband, now everyone can play :)

quite possible, but not in 2 to 3 mouths, the psx2 is a pain to program for, i would say maybe in 8-9 mouths.
But it\'s interesting if sega does indeed do this they are in
a way taking the same approuch as square is with there multiplatform online rpg strategy. think about it PSO on XBOX, GC, DC, and of course psx2. CAN you say chich-ching$$$$$$$$$$$$

Very interesting indeed Chrono... do you know anything about the European release-rumours? I mean.. if it\'s usa only then it doesn\'t consider me much :)

I\'m really waiting for the BB, but it\'s still a year away. When it comes out then we don\'t have to think about slowdowns or "lag"; everything will go like a greased sausage then :)

releasing a 56k modem now could be a smart move ouf from Sony because it would introduce Sony-fans to the internet via Ps2, and with the hard drive it\'s very good idea! But I think when BB comes out you can change the hard-drive for even bigger ( thinking of about 50 gigs ). 8-10 gigs of Hard-Drive space is easily enough for 56k connection, but with BB you can download gigs a day if you want to...

interesting indeed.

about 50 x\'s faster or more.

I don\'t know why anyone would want to play games at 56k.  Unless you are playing checkers, or spades, it\'s just too damn slow.  I realize not much gets relayed back and forth, but even playing games like Starcraft with people with 56k modems is annoying.

I say screw the losers without DSL/Cable.

hehe, can you tell I have DSL?

I do hope though that if they do go the 56k route, and they should don\'t get me wrong, that they split the play up and don\'t intermingle the 56kers with the broadbanders.  I don\'t want a 56ker drinking out of my waterfountain and sitting on the front of my bus.

OK, I\'m off on a tangent.

About the HDD...  I have read in numerous places that it was going to be in the teens as far as gigs.  That seems realistic.  I don\'t see any need to go over 20 gigs.  Hell I only have 6 gigs on my computer here and I only use a few.  Although CD-R sure comes in handy.

Smell you later....

the hard drive is going to be in the tens of gigs, that\'s what a guy from sony (can\'t remember his name, and I don\'t now were I got that information from, since I read it like 2 weeks ago) stated.
