The texture issue...
« on: February 04, 2001, 12:43:51 PM »
Ppl have been discussing the PS2\'s 4mb video ram over
and over, and sure there are great games with good and
lots of textures around on PS2.
But recent products like Oni from Rockstar and Winback from
Koei make me wanna re-open the discussion.
These games look to me ( judging by the screens/movies I\'ve
seen this week )like a step backwards.
Especially Oni which is ought to be anime style :looks
very bland compared to the anime movies and books ,on which
it\'s inspired, these are known to have very detailed environments.
If you\'re gonna do anime style- do it right :even DC can
do that ; Jet grind Radio and thus the cell shading
which could be altered into real anime style.
I\'ve seen gameplay of Oni on Tv and it looks solid but I
still feel as if it is a game the devs didn\'t have enough
time ( read :weren\'t able ) to spice up the environments .
Then there\'s Winback which looks like the N64 version on a
higher resolution.
Of course there are lotsa goodlooking N64 games. I used
to have a N64 I can tell.
In other words; devs should put more effort in it : streaming the text maps with the high bandwidth the PS2 provides( and don\'t give me the copy\'n paste texture crap )
I just wonna say, these new PS2 games give me the scary " stale/bland N64 games " feeling.

let\'s just say, the ps2 has the ability to do great textures, whether or not that ability is used or not is a second.
btw did you see oni on gamequest or that program from tmf (can\'t remember the name) cause if you did, you were looking at the pc version, I\'m not saying that I know if the ps2 version will look better, but U never know.

ONI is known for having bad textures and bad level design.
I recently discovered that my ass is the key to the universe.....now I must fight to protect my ass from those who might abuse it!!!

The playstation2 has great potential for graphics and we wont see the ps2 struggling to get extra power for graphics in a long time. The problem lies with the software and once developers begin to get used to the hardware then we will start to see some great games.

hell no it doesnt have bad level design, who said that!? a profetional arcetect made the levels, and it uses some type of lighting effect that is one of the best  looking out, i think its pretty cool, once you get past the controls, i got it and i like it very much, its a good game and just cause its got bad textures shouldnt ruin anything with the story or gameplay, just give it a try, and dont keep in you mind that the rumors are true cause then you will think they are, just play it  for yourself,a dn it will be a great experience

Ever hear the saying,

"don\'t kill the messenger"?

PS2 is a messenger for the games that are made for it, if a game looks bad it\'s because the developers didn\'t do a good job.  If a game looks good, it\'s because the developers fully utilized the systems power.  That goes for gameplay, controls, and fun factor as well.

The PS2 can stream a ton of textures. And it can also create random textures(No repeated textures) because of its texture architecture.
But there is still no developer trying to use this technic.

Yep Unicron that\'s the point of my thread.
Rockstar and KOei are evidently still not
(able) using this.
It\'s not the PS2 hardware\'s fault.

Yes, Unicron the PS2 can stream like a madman, and randomly generate. There is a game in the works that uses this technique, at least in the replays. World Rally Championship 2001.

I was reading about it in a gaming mag. I read almost all of them so I forget which one. They said that the trees are randomly generated on the fly during replay, I\'m not sure if they mean polygonaly speaking or texturized too, although I would assume textures too.

Also I\'m not sure if this method is applied during real-time racing, but I would think so.

Here are some pics. This first one is the one the magazine used when they were talking about the randomizing. Damn photo man!
