Alright! I rented Driving Emotion Type-S from Blockbuster this afternoon. That means I have until Saturday noon to figure this sucker out. Now, since I ain\'t all that much on arcadey-type (read Ridge Racer) racing games, then perhaps I\'ve made a poor rental decision...but since I\'ve started playing this, I\'ve established two personal convictions about this game (or at least its title): 1) The "emotion" elicited from this game is something boardering on anger and frustration, and 2) the "S" stands for either "S"lippery controls or "S"lides all over the place. Either way, you get my point...I CAN\'T KEEP THESE CARS ON THE ROAD!!! Heck, I can\'t keep these cars OFF the road...basically, I can\'t keep them on the TV screen!!!
Now I realize I enjoy more sim-type play such as that found in the TOCA series (and all Codemaster designed games - but please don\'t turn this thread into an antagonistic barrage against TOCA or any other racer...I want assistance), as well as Need 4 Speed, etc.
I also know that I don\'t tend to especially like the Ridge Racer series cuz I just seem to slide all over the place. But jeez, even the RR series is merciful and I can regain control over the cars in a turn. And with a little effort, I\'ve learned to control the cars quite well in RRV (though I still don\'t enjoy its "brand" of driving as much as more sim-type driving...but I\'ve said that already). With DET-S, however, I just give the SLIGHTEST touch on the stick (also tried it with the digital pad...doesn\'t help)...and the car (doesn\'t matter which of the 1st cars offered) goes completely to the left or right. SLIGHTEST touch offered in an effort to steer in the other direction, and the car goes completely in the opposite direction... Ultimately it is as though the programmers designed the the game so that the nose of the car had a magnet for the walls of the track. Disgusting!
And I\'ve deliberately tried out all of the 1st available cars on all the 1st available tracks. I\'m equally impressed (sarcasm to soon follow!) that a FWD Honda controls in EXACTLY the same manner as that of a RWD Miata. NEAT! Neat??? No...disgusting! In fact, worse yet, setting the view to "behind the car" and the effect of steering left or right seems as though the pivot point has been programmed almost to the rear of the car and not the front wheels.
Okay, okay...am I overreacting here? Maybe,...it is important that I point out that its not that arcade racers may not be "the bomb"; for many gamers, such racers may be the ONLY type of racer that is fun to play. But for me, it is an effort in frustration. More to the point, it is an effort that I\'d like to overcome. I\'d LIKE to like this game...but I need someone that DOES like this type of game to tell me HOW to like it as well.
I will appreciate any advice from those that care to offer. Thanks!
