ps2 price drop?!!
« on: February 07, 2001, 06:16:51 PM »

I found this piece of interesting news at
http://www.coremagazine.com/news/3662.php3

it states:

"According to reports out of Tokyo this morning, Sony is considering a price cut for the PlayStation 2 in Japan. While company representatives refused to comment on the price cut, insiders suggest Sony plans to drop the price of the system by as much as 10,000 yen ($86) this summer to compete with both Nintendo\'s GameCube and Microsoft\'s Xbox. When asked to comment on Sony\'s strategy, SCEI director Kenichi Fukunaga said, "Certainly we plan to oppose the Xbox, but we\'re not targeting any other platforms. Beneath the surface, a war of words has already begun [between Microsoft and Sony]. Some people believe the Xbox is more powerful, but we\'re not using computer-based componets. I\'m confident they won\'t be able to match the level of expression of our exclusive semiconductors."

This is only a japanese price cut (japanese ps2 is $ 360)
but it could also results in a US an European price cut!!
lets pray!!

if the US PS2 does get a price drop it most likely go down from $300 to $250 when X-Box is released..i doubt X-Box will be released this Fall 2001..Microsoft might have a problem with the name "X-Box"..there is another company with the name Xbox..Xbox Technology..neither companies want to give up the right to the name..so BOTH are going to court unless they can work something out..until then the X-Box is still scheduled for Fall 2001 but if the rights to the name doesnt get solved by Summer 2001 then the X-Box will be delayed

well if the price drop does happen in the US then that would really suck for the people that waited months/days/ hours upon hours to get theres and pay the full 300 dollars plus tax. I think that it would be unfair to us people if SONY does slash its prices. BUt hey thats competition for ya wat can you do? WEll I cant say that i hope sony does drop its prices cuz I already paid full price for mine.
Oro?!?

You can never put a price on being 1st in line...

While this reply is directed to Shingoku\'s point, I would hope it is accepted as advice for anyone that would be bitter for being the 1st to own ANYTHING hot and new on the market...

For the record, I did pre-order my PS2.  (I did not wait in lines...but I think those that did typically enjoyed an experience that they will remember for the rest of their lives...and that can be priceless in and of itself).

Now my point.  I purchased my PS2 because I wanted it and I wanted it as soon as possible.  I did not purchase it to be "the 1st on my block" but rather because I have loved playing games and I\'ve always tried to appreciate the latest and greatest advancements as soon as they are available to me.  However, whether I wanted a PS2 (or any hot and new product) for noble reasons or simply to be the 1st on my block to own one...the price that a person pays for that "title" is that you pay the supply/demand price that the market dictates.  If you don\'t appreciate a sense of "being burned" by paying a higher price than someone that might purchase it months (or a year) down the road, well then, don\'t purchase that product (any hot or new product) when it first comes out.  Pretty simple.

On the other hand, when you watch a price drop on something you have owned for months or maybe a year, take a moment (before you feel bitter or cheated about the price drop) to ask yourself if you have enjoyed the experience of owning that particular item for the last few months or year.  Would you have traded that experience for having waited months or a year before you could have enjoyed all the fun times with friends, new corners turned in adventures, combos realized, or incredible endings explained only by your hand and effort?  Is the thought of having missed out on that worth $50 or so dollars?  On the other hand, was the fun that you were allowed to experience by owning that item earlier in the year worth the extra $50 or so dollars?

That is a question only answerable at a personal level.  But I hope each of us that DOES like to buy things early, remember to appreciate all the experiences we were able to enjoy...period.

Thanks,
w1ngman

wow you said a mouthful there. Someone took econ. Aneways im not bitter about paying the full price for the ps2. 300 dollars is a fair price considering its a playstation 1 player, ps2 player, dvd player, cd player, etc etc. So if the price did drop, I wouldnt be bitter. I agree with wingman. See, I took econ too. lol

But the price-drop is a good opportunity to buy PS2. And if it happens next X-mas ( the most likely time for it to happen :) ), the sales will get up.

At least all my friends are going to get PS2 when the price drops even a bit.

I see nothing unfair about it

I still think $299 plus tax for a PS2 is a steal,

All I care about is Sony getting there userbase up so developers make money and make more PS2 games

That is all

£300 is a steal for a PS2

in Fact £400 is a absolute steal for a PS2

its a package that Dixsons in the UK are doind

£400 will get you

PS2
2 controllers
4 games (can be full price or not it up to you ).
plus you get a voucher for 50% of a DVD or something too :D.

Gefore in Glasgow are doing

£369.99 for
PS2
1 controller
2 games

it just shows that it is far better to shop around before you buy.

Well, I paid $485 (plus the $40 Western Union charge) for my PS2 that I got off eBay, and I\'m not complaining. The future looks bright for the Black Beast and I would pay $500+ for the machine. It was well worth it.
