The Reverend Damns Thine Rumors To Hell!!!

The Reverend thought that this stuff would cool down...but alas, it hasn\'t.

Quote

Bloomberg is reporting that Sony\'s financial results are likely to be down nearly 22% for the fourth quarter last year due to problems with production for the PlayStation 2. The severe shortages in Emotion Engine chips may have been a key factor. At the same time, Sony are now reportedly examining the possibility of a PlayStation 3 some time in 2002, due to the lack of broadband connectivity at this time, something they had not counted on.

No kidding...PS3 by 2002?  I think not.  It is almost common sense that Sony wouldn\'t do anything that stupid.  What a dumb rumor.

Why would it be so bad?? 2002\'s only next year. There won\'t be that many games on the PS2 by then, so both the developers and the consumers will only sustain a minor loss. If the PS3 is supposedely 100 times more powerful then the PS2, then when other then to unveil the PS3 right after the launches of both the GC and the X-Box?? Wouldn\'t this take care of the problem of these systems being superior to the PS2 in terms of hardware?? If Sony continued to fully support the PS2 until 2002, and drop their bomb (the PS3) sometime during the middle of the year, I don\'t see a significant setback that would hinder Sony.

That\'s good on paper hey Hyper. But the people that brought ps2. Would be QUITE PISSED if ps3 came out next year. It won\'t happen, Sony would lose a lot of userbase from it..

Sorry but this is BS for several reasons

1.Why spend so much money on a console only to help kill it off only a year since its release

2.Releasing a new console so soon will piss off both 3rd parties and consumers because 3rd parties will have to invest more money on another consoles and consumers wouldn\'t buy another console so soon.

3.Developing a console take atleast 4 yrs and the PS3 probably only been in development for a 1 and a half at most.

4.Ken Kutaragi said the PS3 chipset is FAR from finished and won\'t be for sometime.

5.The PS2 is selling like crazy so why would Sony kill it by releasing another console?

To put simply it wont happen

Someone P-L-E-A-S-E remember that it was just as the PSX hit the market that Sony began talking of the PSX\'s sequel (yep, the PS2).  Now that took, what, 5-6 years to come to fruition?  Why do you think its gonna take less time for the PS3?  Face it, the PS2 came as fast as it did, and yet it did so in the presence of a serious shortfall of chip components.  So why do you think the PS3 is gonna bypass all that development time, etc. and pull into the spaceport within a single year???  C\'mon!

And as far as the Bloomberg report goes, well, Sony\'s revenue DID infact fall that low and the PS2 production shortfalls were directly the cause.  BUT...I seriously doubt a company like Sony would not have recognized that Broadband wasn\'t going to take off like a blaze across the USA.  Rather, I\'d say Sony DID know it wouldn\'t take off, but as a marketing scheme to get us to snap up its PS2s it promised Broadband capabilities b/c Sony knew we WOULD think Broadband was going to take off.  Ultimately, Sony ended up selling more systems than ever before in history and just has to say "sorry" about the lack of broadband...  Not to bad for Sony.

ummm no - i dished out over 700 buck so far on the console games and acessories and that would count as a big loss to me

plus do you know how much developers spend making a game ad buying the dev kits - trust me it hurts

Actually I thought the launch was very sucessful, it\'s been 4 months and the PS2\'s are still selling very well!

I guess you\'re right. However, the casual consumer is easily fooled by something new. If they see revolutionary graphics ten times better then what the competition has to offer, it will have them considering a purchase. I still stand by my opinion that if Sony plays its cards right (mainly the price), the PS3 could be a success next year. The PS2 has already been or will have been established in most people\'s homes by next year, so all it would take would be the right advertising and enough amount of media hype.

But not the competition or developers. They will "enlightened" these people with ads saying how Sony has abandoned them by releasing a new system 2 years after the first system. This would alienate the fans of the PS2, even the fanboys. Also, developer who have spent millions on PS2 development, will not pack up and move to the newer system, they will pack up and move to work on another company\'s system. Bad move for Sony no matter how you cut it.
Opinions are not important.
