I have a question about creating a website.
« on: February 15, 2001, 04:35:08 PM »
I want to make my own website, and I\'m thinking about using GeoCities. I have a few questions for anyone who has used GeoCities or just made a website in general.

1. Is GeoCities really free?
2. Are there any special terms?
3. Whats the limit of space?
4. Is it easy to use?(i.e. uploading?)

I have FrontPage 2000 so I\'m set as far as creating it goes. Now I just need someplace to host my site.

Geocities is free.
There are no special Terms.
50 MB is the amount of space I believe.
Depends, do you use the point and click, or do you know HTML?

Ok thanks. :D

I know some HTML, but I\'m not sure what you mean by point and click. Do you mean the program I\'m using to create the site?

well geocities has it to where you can do the code or just point and click at what you want to do and it will make a site with what you want - but html code is more custimizale than the pre determined content

if you know code then use it

Geocities is free and fast. I noticed that it\'s just fine. Another sources are ( but it\'s awfully slow and too \'flash\'y ) http://www.moonfruit.com ( -the site is being done before your eyes; the spinal cord; but you can edit it and so on ).

I\'d pick GeoCities; moonfruit is just too dam slow. And Geocities has quite good page-wizard ( homepage-making program ); and you can do just fine sites with it.

Good luck to your site!

I hate WYSIWYG editors. I\'d never even thinkof using FrontPage at least, yuck! There are some decent editors out there, but Notepad rulez supreme! :D

Notepad would be good, but it\'s very hard to use!

Hawke, can you link me to help-site for html-codes to use in notepad?

Notepad hard to use????? Oh come on. You double click on the icon and you\'re ready to go, you just need to know how to use a keyboard, har :p

I got some good links to useful pages bookmarked but seems they\'re all of CSS, DHTML and more advanced stuff. It\'s good to start from the bottom and build your new knowledge on a steady base. I recommend you just search the \'net for some Horrible Text Mess-up Language (HTML) tutorials and stuff. Worked for me. Also you could check bookstores or your local library for a book named "HTML Expert". Quite useful with easy listings of your everyday tags and many handy tutorials. Most of all you must DO this stuff. Try out what affects what and why etc. Also, examining ready code is a great way to learn some tricks, but don\'t steal someone\'s layouts and claim them as your own. For you would burn in hell for that. Or something :)

Sounds very complicated :)

Agh, I think I will when I have time. But the geocities pagebuilder is just good enough to last until summer. The time when I have time :)

Complicated?

It is not very complicated. If you can use the UBB code here on the http://www.psx2central.com/forums/">forums you already know some basic text functions and how the links and all work (= with tags). The HTML tags differ a bit, but the principle is the same.

You never know when skills like this could come in handy... :)

ok, I\'ll test it out :)

But still, nonetheless, I\'ll have to spend time before I learn to use notepad. And now I just don\'t have time for that.

Thanks for help anyway, Hawke. I will copy/paste that and will try to search for information soon. But present, I\'ll be using the page-wizard at geocities ;)

But I\'ve heard positive replies about notepad from many webpage-makers. It\'s the best.

GeoCities is a pile of crap. As is the usual bunch of free US community website thingies. I use http://www.f2s.com. It\'s free and they provide 20 megs of space. You can use PHP3, CGI etc - but that probably won\'t mean anything to you. ;)

Oh, and they don\'t have any ads whatsoever either, unlike GeoCities who use a 500x500 ad (ok, so that was a bit exaggerated).
RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAPETIME!
(thanks Chizzy!)
