I was wondering this myself. I\'m looking to get modem or dsl soon too, I just don\'t know which one to get. I heard that sometimes cable is no better than 56k. I guess I don\'t understand how all this "internet":D stuff works.

Looking at the tech specs, cable would be the better option.  But as you probably know, the more people connected and surfing on the same node that you\'re on, the slower cable can get.  Personally my parents\' cable company (@home) has greatly improved their service and they have gotten speeds above 600k with no connection problems since 1999.  They pay $40/mo for it.

On the other hand, DSL is more convenient as it\'s just a technology placed on your current phone line.  Though it can be pretty cheap, the service slows down the further you are away from the home office.  Most people I\'ve talked to have never gotten 600k, mostly 200-300k.

As for pricing, there are websites like 2wire.com & dslreports.com that rate and give the costs of the ISPs in your area.  Let us know who you choose~~~

Cable is better. No doubt about it. Its faster(I always get between 2 and 3mb\\sec), its much easier to install(just install the free NIC they give you into your comp, connect the cable wire to the modem, connect the modem to the NIC, and you\'re all set) than DSL, and the modem they give you is pretty cool lookin too.

I think I\'m gonna go with cable too. Not sure yet though. I guess I should just look into the different companies that I can get it through. What companies do all of you cable and dsl users have?

My vote goes with cable(I have it), it has a steady flow, usually 2-3MB per second.

for those that live do not have broadband access look into  starband, the first satellite inernet provider that has both downlaod and upload without the need of a modem.

the equipment is pricy though, 399 for equip. 160 for install and 40 for the shipping. 70 per month w/ a 1 year contract i belive.

uploads @ 150

downloads @ 400

Heres the deal, if you are 10000 feet and below from your dsl office, get dsl, if not, get cable.  DSL is way better than cable if you are close to your dsl office.

The best thing out is T3 of course... if you can find it and have that kind of money...

I\'m on cable. Once u get download speeds over 50kbytes a sec. Anything else above it is good. But not really needed. Unless u need to download stuff REALLY fast. Cable does me fine.. But i\'m in aus. So we get ripped off pretty good.
