Is it worth to buy a PS2 right now?
« on: March 03, 2001, 10:40:41 AM »
I was wondering if its worth buying a PS2 right now. I\'ve heard many complaints about overheating and incompatibility with some old PS1 titles and that the DVD quality is good. At this point, with the games that our out right now and the price, is it worth it?

Get one now b/c in a few short days Onimusha, ZOE, Bouncer will be out.  The DVD IMO is great.

first of all, i have heard of no overheating probs,i heard of other probs, but no overheating, the ps2 only has incompatability with like 5 ps1 games, and those are the only old ars ones, exept final fantasy tactics. The dvd quality is great, as long as you have s-video or component hook ups of course, and as for the games... this is the month, Z.O.E., Onimusha,Ring of Red, Quake Revolution, as well as GT3 and Dark Cloud that be released laer next , month.

its a good time to be a ps2 gamer.

In short no i wouldn\'t get a PS2 now. I won\'t say why because i\'ve just recently wrote a big post replying to something similar in a different group below.

I remember when I first registered in these threads I made a topic called "Should I buy a dreamcast"  Some saw it as flamebait..and the thread didn\'t really go the way I wanted it to.  But I learned that you shouldn\'t rely on what other people tell you...if you really want something..then get it.  What does it matter if someone else says it sucks..or its cool.  As for the problems go..I haven\'t had any problems with my ps2..and the DVD playback isn\'t nearly as bad as what people make it seem.  I think it just depends on how you hook it up..if you decide to use an S-video cable then its all good..I recommend you use that.  It makes a huge difference...I tested it out on TTT and on the regular cables that come with the box made it look blurry and bland compared to the S-video.  Anyways..its your choice..just be smart with your money thats all I can tell you

With Zoe and the Metal Gear 2 demo around the corner.

HELL YEAH :)
I met him 15 years ago, I was told there was nothing left, no reason, no concious, no understanding and even the most rudamentory sense of life or death, good or evil, right or wrong, I met this 6 year old child with this blang pale emotionless face and, the blackest eyes, the devils eyes, I spent 8 years trying to reach him, and then another 7 trying to keep him locked up because I realised what was living behind that boys eyes was purly and simply evil.

Well, if you currently have a Dreamcast and a PSX, you are currently pleased by the games but want a PS2, wait til NGC is released. That way, PS2 will be issued a price cut. Or you could trade in your PSX and get some loot since PS2 is backwards compatible with PS1 games.

I don\'t know, $299 is a lot to shell out now. I mean I could afford it, but why pay that when in 3 months it may be 200 dollars? If are patient, it will pay off, if you aren\'t, well you will still be getting a great buy.

That\'s what I\'m saying. Wait till October. By then the HDD/Modem will be released (If not already built into the hardware), whatever small hardware bugs there are will be fixed, there\'ll be a huge library of games, their online plan will be solidified if not already in effect, and you\'ll generally have a much better idea of what the competition has in store. In fact, unless you\'re a hardcore game fanatic, don\'t buy ANY console until it\'s at least a year old. Spend that time renting, doing your homework on it, listening to other people\'s opinions, and watching the market as well as it\'s parent company to see what the future may hold for the console.

Sure you won\'t be on the "Cutting edge" of gaming technology, but what are you buying the console for anyway.. kick ass fun games or bragging rights?

BTW Claypool 2001, you wouldn\'t happen to be from Claypool Indiana by any chance would you?

I\'m a early adoptor, so I had to get mine at launch... or turn in my early adoptor membership card. :D Seriously, if you got the money, and even one title is a \'must have\' for you, get it now and enjoy. However if your waiting for GT3 or MGS2 and the current titles dont excite you, wait. You may be lucky enough to catch the 1st price drop.
