Bouncer Review (sorta)
« on: March 09, 2001, 03:50:25 PM »
A friend and I went down to Funco (we just got one!) and he picked up "The Bouncer", while I reserved a copy of Onimusha (got a free t-shirt also) and Z.O.E . We went back to his place and unwrapped the package to one of the most hyped PS2 games.

First off, the graphics are simply amazing. I was in awe the complete game. The lighting is perfect, the cinemas are amazing--with an extra cool "blur" effect.

The gameplay though..Eh, it is fun at first. But quickly becomes repetive. Fight, cinema, fight, cinema, every once in awhile a battle by yourself. It is a cycle. And while, it is awesome the first few times, it becomes boring very very fast. Granted, the moves look awesome. It just doesn\'t offer enough.

Now, everyone knows people was saying it was short. But, never in my life could I imagine it being this short. He beat it in one sitting and then so did I (SION and Volt). If you skip the cinemas it is extremely short . It doesn\'t offer much difficulty either, so you shouldn\'t have any problems beating it.

Worth buying? No way. It would be an excellent rental, but $50 dollars for a game that lasts at most 2-3 hours is horrible.

Square should make a sequel though. Less cinemas, more varation on the fighting, interactive backgrounds and what not. Could be an excellent sequel. But, as it stands, The Bouncer just falls short and is a pretty big dissapointment.

The game is short, but you can continue playi ng it over to level up your characters and learn new moves etc...

I don\'t really agree with the formula but there is high replay value to the game

still I just rented it and will not purchase, mainly because I find all fighters boring

I wasn\'t impressed with multi-player. I can think of better ways to spend mulit-player.
TimeSplitters, etc.

well i\'m passed 3 hours into the game...I don\'t consider it finished until all 3 bouncers are at the highest level and have all stats and skills maxed.

Now lets see...i\'m 3:13 into the game and its my 3rd time going through it.
resident evil/mgs/silent hill were all beaten within that time limit for me at least...well silent hill was more like 4 hours but i\'m not near done getting all 3 of them done so i\'ll pass the 4 hour mark no doubt.

I personally think its a very entertaining game and was well worth my 50$ Its awful that they didn\'t include any of there promises and I hope that they make a Bouncer 2 and capotolize on the mistakes of its predecessor.

You bring an interesting point up. I think the thing that may of caused such a huge dissapointment with The Bouncer is the hype. Square made alot of false promises. Such as anything and everything being interactive and what not. The game really does have potenial, but it just falls short. Nothing a good sequel couldn\'t fix though.

Still, I can\'t help but wonder why Square made so many false promises. They had to know that the fans and buyers of the game was going to be upset. Hype can be a good game, and I don\'t think anyone believes all the hype they are sold. But, Square kept pushing it, and the game just fell short. In my personal opinion, hype may of been the worse thing for The Bouncer.

Yeah perfect words exactly.

In fact I believe that the game would of made better with the reviewers and press if they left half of those promises out.

If they told us from the get go that hey this is what the final version is going to have I could of spared myself the dissapointment when I found out half of them were lies, but as you said...nothing a really good sequel can\'t fix.

Yeah, it was really just a bad idea for Square to keep making lies up. Where is the interaction? The "revolutionary" style, etc? Hype can really hurt a game, in this case it did.
