a sad day in gaming history
« on: March 16, 2001, 07:39:30 AM »
Isao Okawa has died. He has been the CEO of Sega for as long as I know. Truly a sad day. We should see quite a tumbling in Sega stock as is the tradition with a companies leader dieing, although I think most of the power was delegated to someone else these past few months.

All Flags at half-staff today! :(

I just can\'t turn this day sad because I heard a complete stranger die. I haven\'t seen him, I never have chatted with him... But I respect him in some ways. R.I.P.

Still, he doesn\'t deserve a tear. People die. Every day.

A cold truth about life.

BTW. I\'m truly sorry but I\'m being honest here.

When you die do you want everyone to just forget that you ever lived?

I don\'t care if I\'m forgotten. When I die, I\'m dead. I know I can\'t accomplish anything so wonderful, so big, so life-changing, that I would be remembered. Thus I don\'t care.

But what does that question have to do with this thread?

That sucks for you. I guess if you don\'t aim for anything you won\'t achieve anything.

You said that he doesn\'t deserve a tear because people die everyday. That is why I asked the question about you.

How could I aim for something big? Well, maybe I\'m depressed when I replied so. How can I know? Maybe "fate" has something in store for me...

Maybe I will become a legendarious Boxer.

Maybe I will become a known artist.

Or then maybe I will just be remembered few generations and then forgotten.

I just can\'t think positively right now.

I touched on this in a earlier thread. When you die, unless you are famous for something that shall make it into the history books, after a few generations, you are forgotten. It is like you never existed at all. Your grandkids will know who you are, your great grand children may be some odd chance, but it is a given, that unless you are famous for something, that your great-great-grandchildren won\'t have a clue on who you are. That is just the way it goes. And Joyda is right, people die everyday. When Dale Earnhart died, it was made a big deal, yet alot of thousands of people die every day. Why was it special that he died ? Because he was famous. That is the difference, fame carries you on after death. Otherwise, you are just a stat.

But, there is no "fate". What happens is up to you. There is circumstances and situations that will make it difficult, but if you truly want to do something you will. Relying on "fate" will only slow you down and make you work less, thus never reaching your goal. And while you may not be famous one day, or not in the history books, you can still affect alot of peoples lives and they will remember you. And in the end, that is what matters.

Despite, these cold facts of life, it doesn\'t hurt to show some respect for those that you do know died. It is impossible to respect everyone who dies, or even acknowledge every death in the world. But, those who do die, should be noted and noticed, for the mere fact they was a human and they are gone now. They had a family and the family lost someone very special to them. Not to mention, if you enjoyed anything Sega produced, he had something to do with that. He was the CEO of Sega. I personally enjoy what Sega has put out, and he was CEO since I can remember, so I respect what he done with the company (despite some bad choices). It is a sad for the industry and most importantly, it is sad for anyone who he affected in any manner.

R.I.P

I can\'t remember who said this, but the quote always stuck in my head. It seems to fit the idea of most people. We as people always put those who are famous ahead of the little people, it seems...

""The death of one is a tragedy, the death of millions is just a statistic.""

I know it was either Joseph Stalin or Benito Mussolini, the Italian dictator.

I actually don\'t believe in fate. That\'s why I included the " -marks.

But that\'s a thoughtful post Living-in-Clip. I agree. If, for example, Madonna would die suddenly, everyone would "know" her, and know her death. I think every music-listener would be aware of her death; thousands of fans might cry for her. It would be stated as a "great loss for this generation of music". There are many names already printed into the books of history. But this doesn\'t come by easy. Spice Girls, for example, never did anything world-breaking, and they were like a comet. They had their time. They won\'t be remembered as a band for long.

But, for example, Mozart ( as his music is "evergreen" ) is immortal. His music is still listened, after many generations, and long his music will be heard. And Hitler will be long remebered, as we still read about Napoleon and Emperor Nero from Rome. Both known from being mentally ill.

Death of many people is usually just stats, but we can\'t say this about the loss of 6,000,000 jews in WWII. It will be also remembered, and it\'s still very forbidden thing to speak about in Germany. It will be long remembered. As related to Hitler.

Oscar Schindler may not be remembered world-wide, but he\'s the hero of Jews, and may be remembered for a Long time for his deeds.

Also, you can become known from your kindness, like Mother Teresa for example. She dedicated her whole life to help others.
And so on...

But actually, I don\'t care if I\'m remembered or not. How can I be aware of it after my death? How can I know, that there\'s still millions of people who remember me when I am dead, or somewhere else?

I don\'t remember who said this, but this is very true:
"When you\'re forgotten, you\'re truly dead".

Think about it. Still, I of course respect Isao for his deeds; inventing a great console; but I know I won\'t remember him like I remember Mozart ( and like I will remember mozart for the rest of my life ). Some people deserve my humble tear, but some not. It relates to  my own personal feelings. How they\'re related to the person dead. I never had "feelings" towards Sega, because I never owned one. But of course I respect every death. That\'s why I\'m not a satanist who jumps around the graveyard digging corpses up...
