Iomega announces a zip drive peripheral for the PlayStation 2.

At the ongoing Game Developers Conference, Iomega unveiled its plans to release a dedicated zip drive for the Sony PlayStation 2. The zip peripheral will connect to the PS2 through one of the available USB ports on the console. The zip drive will open up multiple save functions on the PS2, such as the ability to save and transport levels and character data. Additionally, users will be able to save game data on the PC.
A PS2-specific zip drive is currently in the research and development stages and should be released by the end of the year. However, off-the-shelf zip drives can be used with the optimized games. Development tools that will take advantage of zip storage functions will be made available to PlayStation 2 developers in a few months.

Do we really need this with a 40GB HD coming soon ??

Well, this pretty much seals any argument Anti-MS people had about the Xbox being a desktop computer. Why do we need a friggin\' zip drive AND a HD?  Give me one or the other. Not both.

Then again, this was expected. I mean, Sony didn\'t put USB ports on the PS2 for no reason, now did they? Let the flood of add-ons begin.

let the add-ons flood in

If people want them they\'ll buy them. If 3rd parties want to make things for the PS2 let em

Sony could care less they get there liscense fee, and the consumer determines what they want

Living ****:

The thing is that sony NEVER denied the fact that PS2 was a computer entertainment system...microsoft is full of crap when they say their intentions for the xbox is just games....

i welcome this new era of gaming from a HONEST company like Sony corp.

The arguement about it being cheaper is moot.
An average external USB zip drive is around 100 dollars.
I still think its cool though.

Yep, Atleast it wasn\'t forced into the system.  You have the option to buy or not to buy....

Maybe so. But, what is the point of all this? For the market can be flooded with add-ons that will probably never be used?

It is a good idea; but who is goin\' to buy? After you buy the broadband adapter, HDD, who wants to spend the extra 100 for a zip drive?

Unless it can be used as a giant memory card, then I don\'t see a purpose in it.
If it can be used as a giant memory card, then maybe. But, I won\'t be getting both a HDD and zip drive for the PS2.

I can\'t wait to hear what other stuff people will think of for use of the USB ports. I can\'t wait to put my face on a videogame character and play them with a PS2 digital camera. :)
