Played the Red Faction demo and..........
« on: March 31, 2001, 09:25:43 AM »
Well, i\'ll start off with a pretty neat story. I\'m in Software etc to pick up my copy of Z.O.E (I dont like shopping there cause their games are about 4 bucks more, but they werent sold out of it either). So im sitting their waiting for the guy to go in the back and get the game to ring it up and I notice a Red Faction promotional poster. I ask the guy when does it come out? he tells me May 5, I say ok. Here\'s the wierd part. After I said ok, one of the other people working there said "Red Faction"? "Hold on a second" and he goes running in the back and comes out seconds later with a disc in his hand. He then walks to the PS2 machine and puts the disc in and starts it up. I asked what this was and he said "Red Faction demo". I said to myself "SWEET".  Now, you first must need to know this was in Software Etc, you got kids running around yelling about pokemon and people walking by and talking in the mall, so I will not say anything about the sound/music because I literally couldnt hear it. Also, its was on those sony flat screens like on a laptop computer, so I will not say anything about the graphics.

While im not the best reviewer, i\'ll say what I thought was good and bad about it. Also, I only played the demo for about 10 mins, because I had MGS2 demo. So, if somebody else plays this all the way through, please follow up on some of the gameplay.

The first thing I notcied was that the load times were suprisingly fast (About 6-7 secs) but the menu load time is longer then the in-game loads, wierd. Anyway, the controls work the same as Timsplitters with the dual analog movement which we all know and love.

Basically, there were two things that I had a problem with. First, the frame rate is good right up untill an enemy comes into view, then it slows down. THe second problem I had was the gameplay and levels. I started out walking then shoot a guy, walk alittle more, shoot a guy action. The levels also seemed empty and very plain. Maybe its because I retarted and cant review a game or its because I didnt play the demo for that long. From what I played, I wasnt all that great. Somebody please follow me up!

Well 10 minutes play wouldn\'t be long enough to give you a proper idea of how it plays but I don\'t like the sound of the slow down (esp since im from the UK so if anything more slow down will be present in the UK copy). I read in the demo review that it did slow down but work was being done to improve speed, I just hope its fast when the game is released :).

well if software etc. already got it, then maybe we will be getting ours soon???

10 minutes isnt that good a time to rate a demo seeing as how you have noise bothering you and eople passing by taking your attention, ill wait till we get to ply it in the privacy of our homes, and they should have the framerat problem sorted out by then
\"So are you going to kill her off?\"
Are you insane! I love her character, she stays.
\"The only thing loves done is put you in this position, I say kill her off!\"
Yeah, but you say a lot of things..
and how does that work....  You\'re a bicycle..

its better be, how can you make a game and not notice that the frame rate lowers when there is too much action and not do anything about it.

Hehe I don\'t know... ask the SSX, Starwars Starfighter, Summoner or Unreal Tourniment Creators they seemed to manage it.

Seriously though low frame rate on console games is just not acceptable esp when we have seen the graphics from games like MGS2 and ZOE all running completly smooth.

Anyway it seems that developers are getting better now as the new games seem to be better graphically and maintain a fast frame rate, im talking about games like Quake 3: Revolution, ZOE, Onimusha, GT3 A Spec etc. So hopefully in the future no games will have this problem that would be sweet :).

Framerates a major bummer in a FPS

I won\'t buy the game if it doesn\'t run smoothly...

so they better fix it

There is a form to signup for a free Red Faction demo on their site: http://www.redfaction.com/get_demo.cfm

Btw, it is restricted to US residents.
