Where are the next generation games?
« on: April 08, 2001, 09:56:35 AM »
The Playstation 2 has had some very good games for it so far, but none of them have been truly revoulutionary in terms of gameplay. For example, while Final Fantasy 10 has some of the best graphics on the system, its gameplay will remain for the most part unchanged. Dont get me wrong here, I like my Ps2 alot (i didnt really drop it teh bath tub :) ) but I just thought with the power of the Ps2 they would be making some more revoulutionary games. Anyways I would appreciate some input here.

Thank you for responding to the first intelligent post of BlahBlah! Hope I didnt scare anyone.

Maybe if you gave it more than 20 minutes, you\'d get an answer.  Or maybe if your "friend" wasn\'t spamming up the forums so that posts go shooting off to the bottom.

I think games WILL improve a lot more over the next year, just like games for the PSone did.  What I have seen  so far impresses me though.

Revolutionary games require revolutionary game designs and code

Add into the fact that the PS2 has a steep learning curve the 1st gen games we\'re pretty much Last gen games with graphic upgrades and minor power tweaks.

On the other hand games like Starfighter, ZOE, MGS2 Demo, Timesplitters, SSX, Smuggglers Run all have next qualitites beyong graphics with either huge enviroments, large amounts of enemies on screen at once, or 4 player split screen mode running at 60FPS, or in MGS2 which is just mind boggling next gen goodness already

Then games like ,Getaway, Dropship, Herdy Gerdy, Red Faction, and quite a few more are all looking next gen worthy and coming soon

I think the jump from 2d to 3d was the last big revolution we will see in quite some time - certainly there will be a few games which try to break the mold of the many different genres out there but nothing so grand as the migration to 3d graphics was with the advent of the Playstation and Saturn several years ago, this generation has only really refined what the developers can achieve by giving them more power to play with - but its not all bad, the extra horsepower all this new hardware provides does open up some interesting avenues previously unexplored like the ability to use somewhat more sophisticated \'AI\'.

But in the meantime Im happy with the polished and well executed remakes, perhaps later in the PS2s life we will see developers start to push out and explore new game concepts and ideas.

PS2: A true gamer\'s system
« Reply #5 on: April 08, 2001, 11:40:12 AM »

The PS2 has shown us all that systems’ graphical capabilities are not all that important.  We were all humbled when we found out that, at best, the PS2 produces substandard graphics.  But look at things in a different light.  To remain loyal to a system that you know is never going to have the flawless graphics that you had envisioned is by far the most honorable thing to do.  Think about it.  You, as a gamer, would’ve proven to yourself and all of your associates that you value gameplay over good graphics, simply because you own a technically deficient system like the PS2.  Sure, the NGC and X-Box produce waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better graphics than the PS2, but do they have MGS2, or SSX for that matter; two of the most playable games on this face of God’s green earth?  Well, the GCN will be receiving a special edition of SSX, but as a wise man once said, “The original is always better.”  Do not fret Sony fans.  You are the only true gamers on this planet.  While everyone else it marveling at the graphics their respective systems can produce, you will be playing some of the best games ever produced, without all the glitz and glamour.
Respect your fellow gamers simply because they enjoy playing videogames just like you.

rrrrriiiiiiiiiiiight.

So I\'m not a true gamer even though I own pratically every other system on the planet and enjoyed them without caring about their graphical capabilities?

You seem like an intelligent person, but your logic is seriously flawed. You don\'t have to own a PS2 to be considered a "true gamer".

actually that guy is trying to say that PS2\'s gaphics suck and that all of the poeple who love their PS2\'s must love it for gamplay because the graphics don\'t match "the all powerful graphics" of the Xbox and GC

too bad he is too ignorant to prove what he is saying - true they have good graphics but not as advanced as he would like to think

uh...how in the world do you know that? have you actually played the game? Did you somehow get a copy of a demo that has yet to be released to major gaming sites such as ign.ps2, dailyradar, psx2central.com? For one thing FF10 is supposed (note: rumored to be) more based on strategy then turned based. As for your revoulutionary games, did you play the mgs2 demo yet? If ya did and you didnt think it was revoulutionary then...bah nm everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Anyways don\'t be looking down on games that hasnt even been released yet. Such premature judgements are usually wrong in the end.

In fact, if you download the lastes movies from dailyradar about FFX, you will see that though parts of it look similar, the fighting is already very different - for on thing, summmons and spells remain with your party and stuff... watch em.  GT3 DOES look amazing though.  I have to admit, it really looks much cooler than GT2, weather, cars, everything.

Ignorant? You are quite misguided sir. I conduct a vast amount of research on an immense amount of subject matters. I think you’re just too mad to appreciate the logic in my past post. I have witnessed the PS2 first hand, and I must state I was not at all impressed. On the contrary, I was surprised that a 300-dollar piece of hardware could be so full of technical flaws. Of course, with this rather harsh opinionative information stated, I will reaffirm that graphics aren’t everything. Gameplay is of paramount importance, and so far, the PS2 has enjoyed quite a few software titles where gameplay does in fact take the forefront.

Rasputin whether or not you are impressed with PS2\'s graphics is a matter of opinion.

And if you like to study so much may I suggest you do a "vast amount of research" on social skills.

I believe the next generation games will be the massive multi-player games where there is an go anywhere do anything type of gameplay. Like Star Wars Galaxys and Planetside but beyond even those. With great graphics of course.
