Hooking up PS2 to a stereo.
« on: April 08, 2001, 03:21:24 PM »
I have a Phillips Stereo, with 4 speakers, I was wondering, if and how to hook up my PS2 to my stereo.  Stereo is about $300 quality wise.  I just need general instructions.

If you have a 300 dollar stereo, you probably don\'t have digital inputs.
If your stereo is an "all in one" kind, it will probably only have 1-2 inputs, but that\'s enough.  Just take the three color cable from the PS2, yellow goes to tv, and red/white go to left and right inputs on your stereo.  These often can be put into the "phono" input, or "md" inputs.  You may need to get extension cables if you don\'t have some lying around.
If you have a seperate component stereo, it should be even easier, most amps have multiple inputs video/sound, and then take the output to your tv.
I would really recommend you save up and buy yourself a seperate component stereo.  I saved for about 5 months in 1999 (including 1 birthday, and christmas), and bought myself and amp, a cd player, and 4 good speakers.  The amp alone was 1700 (CDN), but boy, hooking up the PS2 with an optical digital cable, and using Dolby Digital/DTS really improves the games you play and (especially) the DVDs you watch.

au contrair mon frair!  I have a $300 stereo that is very nice.  5.1 and 2 inputs!

TheOneBillyGunn, the best way for us to help you is for you to take a pic of the back of your stereo.  Or point us to the website of the manufacturer.

Is it a deck stereo or a mini-system?

Well if it only has 4 speakers it\'s impossible to hear 5.1 sound out of that particular stereo.  Now it is possible it has digitial inputs, then does some downmixing for Dolby Surround (no Pro-Logic with 4 speakers), but at $300 I doubt it.

One Billy Gun- As Fatal said, it sounds like you just need to hook up your PS2 to the back of your stereo with 2 stereo composite cables; the red and white ones shown below.  The yellow goes to your TV.

damn damn damn damn damn

It wont work, I have the gamelink 300 S-video cables and don\'t get me wrong, it\'s a 10 foot cable and could easily reach my stereo.  The hard part is that the distance between the 3 wires is not much more than an inch... :( there must be some way!  It\'s either sound or graphics, personally I choose graphics.  What I\'m gonna have to do now is buy a sound system with digital inputs unless you guys can solve my problem.

go buy a male/female extension for the red/white.  They\'re dirt, and I mean DIRT cheap.  Then you can put the yellow video into your tv and sound to your stereo.

Or you can do the opposite and just buy an S-Video cable and extend it that way.

Hmm, with the extra length on the video make the sound sync a problem...  hehehe...

you can get scart leads that have a extra two leads coming out of them, the scart goes into your tv, and the other two plug into your aux socket of your system, then simply swith your system to aux and let the gaming commence :D

Unless of course you live in the US, then a scart is pretty much useless to you.

hmmmmm. i did not know this, why is it useless??? They also make  a thing that plugs into the back of your ps2, in the ariel socket thing and has one on it, simply plug your s type video cable/ original cable into the end, off this new part you have wires that can plug into your aux

You don\'t need a scart for anything.  It will be useless to you.  Just get either regular RCA cables, or an S-Video cable.

FackinKubuss, Sony has about 3-4 different models of a receiver that looks almost identical.  If you are putting in surround sound then it most likely supports Digital inputs and the PS2 has a Digital output.  All you need is to run a fiber optic cable from the back of your PS2 to the back of the stereo.  Easy.
