How do I tell a new PS2 to the older models???
« on: April 25, 2001, 11:38:46 AM »
I\'ve heard somewhere that there is a different amount of screws in the base of one or the other. Could some one help me how to determine which is the lastest model (released march I think)

Thanks
Tom

The latest model has lower air vents in the front of the unit, DVD driver version 1.30U, and will be lighter than older units. The difference in weight is quite noticeable because the heatsink config has been changed as well as the power supply and DVD drive.

I prefer heavy consoles. The weight of my PS2 ( scph 30004 or somethin ) is just fine imo.
I once had  a Sega Megadrive ( Genesis ), which was a good console, but it was a bit to light. Also, it didn\'t have
those rubber \'feet\' like PS2 has. Instead it had plastic stickouts. If I put it on a smooth table you don\'t wanna push or pull it because it might fall off.

Well, it\'s all in preparation for the price drop. Internally, the Graphics Synthesizer is packaged differently and is much smaller (109mm² vs 184mm² of the old 0.25um version) and the RDRAM is sourced from Samsung (part # K4R271669A-SCK8) in addition to Toshiba (part # TC59RM716MB/RB-8). Having two sources for RDRAM lowers cost and avoids component shortages.

Consumers need not worry about which RAM they get because both Samsung and Toshiba RDRAMs perform about the same. The DVD drive was revamped to address customer complaints. I don\'t know why the power supply was modified, it just is. Maybe to lower costs further since the new PS2 needs less power?
