The Hobbits Are Coming

Vivendi announces long-term deal for Tolkien games.

May 2, 2001

Today Vivendi Universal Publishing and Tolkien Enterprises announced a extensive deal to publish games based on J.R.R. Tolkien\'s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings across multiple platforms. Sierra Studios will responsible for the development and release of multiple titles over the next eight years.
The first title will be based on The Fellowship of the Ring and be coded by Seattle-based WXP Inc, a developer who has previously done work for nVidia - the same company who is providing the graphics chip to the Xbox. Fellowship will appear on an unnamed next-generation console, and be released in early 2002.

“The Tolkien license, combined with our development, marketing and distribution strengths, are truly a formidable combination,” said Agnès Touraine, Vice Chairman & CEO, Vivendi Universal Publishing. “It will reinforce our leading position in the games market, enlarging our offer to customers.”

“The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings properties are the pre-eminent fantasy works of our time and represent one of the strongest brands in the entertainment industry,” said Hubert Joly, CEO, Vivendi Universal Games. “They provide a tremendous amount of rich material from which we expect to make some of the best fantasy games ever created.”

“We plan to release titles on all major gaming platforms in order to make the interactive versions of Tolkien’s great works available to as many gamers as possible,” continued Joly.

“The world of Middle-Earth will come to life in Sierra’s upcoming games,” said Laurie Battle, Director of Licensing for Tolkien Enterprises. “This relationship will allow us to reach out to a new audience which may never have experienced the magical realm that J.R.R. Tolkien created in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. In addition, people who are already fans of the books will now have the opportunity to step into the shoes of their favorite characters and explore the lands that they have imagined.”

With The Fellowship of the Ring hitting theaters worldwide this December, Tolkien fever will be at a boiling point, which makes the timing of these games spot on. More information on all of the titles will be released at E3 in the next couple weeks.

Whell, judging from all the nVidia reference and the inherent PC assosciation that comes with Sierra Studios, the series will shine on the Xbox more than it can ever hope to on the other technically inferior consoles. Its things like this that just make you want to say:

Resistance is Futile

Whell, I\'m not a geek, so I wouldn\'t know, but its safe to assume that the table top incarnation based on this universe, is fairing fairly well. However, one can not be in the state of total certainty, as one is obviously too kewl to be assosciating with geeky material such as this.

Taking something from a succesful book doesn\'t make it a success.  Go rent the original LOTR movie.... what a pos.  This game does appeal to me, however, since I love the Tolkien books.  I hope it\'s well done... luckily it looks like a PC port, so unless it\'s exclusive, I won\'t have to shell out for a box.

There was a Lord of the Rings Vol.1 game that came out for the Super Nintendo a while ago... it wasn\'t that good. Hopefully, these will be much better.

I have played al of the LOTR games, and they are abysmal.
Seriously.
They can be ranked with Superman64.
If you like LOTR you should defiantly check out the Wheel of Time.
Same style, much more mature though.

Heh, yeah, up to, what... 8 books now?  about 8000 pages?  I\'ve read throught it 5-6 times... heh heh.  Books 6 and 7 are a bit slow, but the latest one was back to his original fast paced style.  Get the WOT and read it boyz!
